What do they mean by single mothers though because they like to pick and choose what they mean to make black folks look bad. Does this mean single but the father still around or what?
Probably using the government definition of single. If you're not married, you're single. Both parents can still be in the house but if they aren't married, they probably both considered single parents. I don't know if this is the criteria they used, but it's probably the easiest way for them to gather this data and conduct this study. Otherwise, you'd have to do tons of surveys and interviews to capture everyone's unique living situation and then categorize them all.
For example, is the divorced mom considered a single mother? Is the still married but living separated mom not considered a single mother? Are the civil union parents living together considered single parents because they not technically married? Widowed mother? Alot of scenarios that you have to define. Way easier to just check marital status and then see if they have a dependent.
