I'm not on the ADOS wave but I think African American helps separate who is black and from America versus those who are black and from say Nigeria. By just saying black it puts us all under the same umbrella which is what white people intended when coming up with white and black. Doesn't really matter to me though I use both black and African American. Think the debate is just a distraction anyway. Anyone of African descent living in America is an African American. When we speak of Italian Americans, Irish Americans, Asian Americans, etc. there is no distinction between those that's been here since colonial days and those that just arrived. They are American citizens of their own ancestral. I don't have to tell you who are the only people who can claim this as their homeland. They're mostly dead. Those that see themselves as misplaced Africans born outside of Africa with US passports.

I totally get what you're saying but my point is exactly that of your second sentence. Nigerian, Ghanaian, Jamaican or whoever know where they came from specifically and can be called Nigerian-Americans like white people call themselves italian-americans or whatever. It's that for us who are descendants of the slave trade I feel we should be called African-Americans. It recognizes our heritage and African origins while also highlighting that the history of our lineage was hidden from us not allowing us to trace back to what country we originated from. Hope I'm conveying my thoughts clearly.
