Exact OPPOSITE. It Was Written was celebrated commercially from jump out the gate, selling 2+ million, enormously successful singles, and being Nas' highest selling album to date. But it wasn't received critically in the beginning
To Simp a Butterfly is not celebrated commercially, and critically. Kendrick stans grasping for straws tryna align themselves with Nas
The beef I have with the IWW comparisons is that although critics weren't slurping it up (most critics nowadays are outrageous dikkriders) the IMPACT of that album was felt, and the influence it had following its release is pretty damn apparent.
I don't think To Pimp A Butterfly will have/is having the same type impact and influence as gkmc let alone It Was Written, nor is it matching it as a body of work (still a nice album imo). Which is why all that "instant classic, most critically acclaimed of all time" shyt is goofy to me.

Man this shyt ain't flop, it just ain't as commercial as GKMC. It's not that kind of record, it's jazzy/funky and experimental, which goes against what most consider hip hop, and that's why I think some people are so critical of TPAB. I love it and it's been getting constant rotation in the ride.
