A bit premature to call it a failure this early. I am curious how the Beats music app is doing. I have Spotify Premium and am very happy with it.

To make matters worse for Tidal, its main rivals are now surging. On April 20th, Pandora and Spotify occupied positions No. 3 and No. 4 on the U.S. iPhone revenue chart, respectively. This was the first time two music streaming services have hit the top 4 in sales simultaneously. In order to achieve the feat, Pandora and Spotify had to push out Candy Crush Saga out of U.S. iPhone top 4 revenue chart, which is a remarkable achievement.

It looks like Tidal’s attacks on Spotify and Pandora actually managed to increase public awareness of the services, boosting particularly Spotify’s download performance at the end of March. And now, a few weeks later, the combined revenue performance of the two music apps is hitting a new milestone. To add insult to injury, Beats Music has started cracking U.S. iPhone top 20 revenue chart.

I do think that a portion of the people praying on Tidal's downfall are doing so because of how friggin smarmy the whole rollout and promotion came off.

We have artists whose tens of millions of dollars of earnings we have read about for years in Forbes saying they will get more of our $ from a purchase with their service on some charity shyt as a marketing tool. Crazy. I would have loved to been a fly on the wall in the meetings where that plan was conceived.

The Tidal relaunch has to be one of the most dumbfukk publicity stunts in history. When they changed all their twitter profiles to have that blue shyt and people was like, "what's the cause?"

Jay tried to take the same route with Tidal as he did with his other successes but failed to realize that a music streaming business is not like vodka. You can't just add some star power to it and get people to buy it.

Yep. He thought that getting a buch of popular celebs would convince stans/"real fans" to join. The people who would pay for tidal to support their fave already supported their fave by owning (buying) their music, so it wasn't a good idea to use that as the main marketing strategy. Tidal isn't offering anything new and people would rather stick with what they have already. I've heard a lot of them say that they don't want to give up their play lists on spotify. They also mentioned something about a student discount.

They thought they could get Jay as the face and people would just throw money at it....

We are smarter then that Tidal...

Now if Apple bought it... then they can double the price and call it iTunes Pro and goooold
