They spent over 2 decades trying to make the conventional console model work for them and it just didn't work out. Even now the main value of Microsoft Gaming is not Xbox or Xbox Studios it's Activision Blizzard and Bethesda two companies Microsoft really didn't even build up. Xbox management pretty much destroyed Xbox. The only reason it still even exist is the parent company is so flushed with cash they could weather the storm of all those losses and bury it in the balance sheet for years.

The idea of a “high end” console/pc hybrid is something people been clamoring for, for years.

Of course the usual suspects will search for an angle to hate. But if they get the power vs Price right(and fix windows for a real “game mode”) Then this could be a GOAT console.

Who has been clamoring for that? PC people want a PC that they can take apart, upgrade, customize etc.

Console people wanna turn on their console and play.

This thing is gonna be another bomb, console gamers are gonna get a PS6 and PC gamers are not gonna pay 1k for some prebuilt close garden garbage.

Why would they be morons? It's not a mainstream product it's for enthusiast. This is probably the smartest thing they've done for a home console. They're clearly going to sell these things at a profit and they'll be expensive but it's more or less a unique product nobody else offers. A PlayStation doesn't play stuff like Steam library games and nor does a Switch. They've already said this will be a very high end product. Likely an X080 level at minimum.

The smartest thing they can do is stop trying to out PlayStation PlayStation. Nintendo realized that with the Wii and started putting out unique products and now Microsoft will as well.

Nvidia isn't stupid for making the 5090 card. It has a market and people buy it.

Because they would lose a majority of their console sales to Sony. Last I checked they sold 33 million Series consoles. If they release a 2k console a majority of those people will move over to Sony especially if there console is only $600 and all of the Microsoft games are dropping on it too. As much as y'all keep saying it a lot of people do not have any desire to be a PC gamer lol.
