In a nutshell, a long time friend of mine has been moving up the ranks where he works and told me last night he can easily get me in the door if I knew GIS. Though I have no prior interest in the field, this would mean a 15 thousand dollar salary increase for me and other possible doors being opened. I currently do not have any certs but about a year and a half ago I was able to work my way into a pretty good paying computer tech position just off general knowledge. Has any of the Coli fam worked with GIS? Is it difficult to learn? Is it something that could be self taught or learned via Udemy? Salary increase considered, do you think it's worth the pursuit?

Nah don't have it.
Yes, I've done lots of GIS. Like anything it just takes some time to learn. So it's not "hard", just have to learn the software and how to apply it for your particular field.

Looked into it getting GISP, and may do it eventually.
But yes you should get it, especially if you have computer science background, which I also don't have, and doubt I'll go to deep that direction.

I've seen salaries for people with GIS and computer science skills and its crazy...even the part time/temporary gigs are banking....then again the oil and gas industry will pay top dollar here in Houston for those types of skills.

Long story short....get it.

I’m working on GIS specialist certification by University of California, Davis via Coursera and it’s an skill. Thoroughly enjoying it and I am getting the skill for a career in urban planning but it appears just knowing how to use it can get me in a lot of doors.
