Monroe was a big PG and Thompson was an ABA player. The NBA didn't adapt those ideals till Jordan was a clear off guard in the NBANah I think Earl "the peal" Monroe changed the idea of what a shooting guard was. And Dave Thompson (Jordan's idol)
He's a 70s PG. He was modeled to be a SG initially in OKC but he's been a PG for most of his time with the Rockets. He just doesn't defend PG'S as much as the old schoolHow isn't Harden a 2 guard?

Shooting guard was a white boys position in the 60s and 70s. SF and PG was for the talented all around players. PF used to be a garbage man position till the 90s and then it completely changed in the 2000s
Monroe was seen as a PG even if he defendEd SGs. Magic defended PFs on a nightly basis.Thompson being an ABA player doesn't negate being a shooting guard. As was George Gervin. So are we going to discount Julius Erving cause he played in the ABA too?
And Earl Monroe was a shooting guard who could play the point. Similar to Westbrook or Deron Williams. And he played full time as a shooting guard when we was on the Knicks when he played opposite Walt Frazier
In the 60s and 70s, You also had Sam Jones, Walter Davis, World B Free, dikk Barnett, Gus Johnson, Hal Greer, Lenny Wilkens
This is true. A lot of folks came up on that era and thought it was the rule rather than the exception.
I think height is an issue as well. You look at two of the GOAT SGs in Dumars and West, they are both 6'3. That's right in line with Steph, Kyrie, Russ, Rose, Dame etc and we all know that those guys can go out there and score with the best of them. 30/40 years ago they might have been 2s but in today's league with all this length out there they are basically forced to be PGs.

ABA didn't have definite positions like the NBA and was more free flowing. That's why kids liked the ABA. It was far less restrictive

Yeah most of them just not as "flashy" as the points so they don't get acknowledged. Smitty just talking shyt since he was a SG
Harden
Derozan
Klay
Butler
McCollum
Beal
Middleton
LaVine
The position is doing fine.
but whats funny is I went to high school with Smitty and coming out he was considered to be the next Magic and was slated to play PG at State
Smitty had athletic ability in HS. Injuries took away that from him.Yeah most of them just not as "flashy" as the points so they don't get acknowledged. I would imagine he's comparing the position now to the post-MJ era of Kobe/Ray/Vince/T-Mac/Wade/AI you know?
