we understand you didn't like it breh :skip:
Reductive statement.

I liked the Superman movie (and even wrote a good review about it in this thread). What I DON'T like is the unnecessary changes to Superman lore that Gunn is doing. This is really not hard to understand or comprehend.

I get you but I don't wanna see him or any of his upcoming directors creativity compromised for these movies. That's what got DC fukked up last time when the clueless execs starting meddling with projects.
Unless a director creates an IP they should never have free rein of certain IP’s. Especially one with years of history. Case in point Rian Johnson and the joy he brought Star Wars fans.

Ehh, they can even fukk up with IP they create and have free reign, Stars Wars a good example of that with Lucas and the prequel trilogy. Sometimes creativity needs checks and balances.

There's a hundred years of source material to pull from with Superman and Batman. Everything in James Gunn's 'Superman' is related to source material and things that he's gotten from different story arcs. It doesn't mean you have to like all of the choices but it's all in there somewhere. He's blending different things to make his own, which is what a director should be allowed to do.

If execs get too hands on, it's chaos. It leads to movies feeling like they are incomplete or jarring tonal shifts. You allow creators to create. Plus, I've seen movies where everything was shot for shot a recreation of the book and people still found things to nitpick over. It's not a big deal.

Based on the Rolling Stones interview that was released today, it's becoming clearer that all James Gunn thinks about Superman is that he's "nice and kind". That's it. He doesn't understand or respect anything about Superman otherwise.

Also, he's probably NOT as much of a comic book reader as he claims. I never thought I would be thinking this a week ago. I was defending him so hard.

Damn it, man :palm:
Yet, he's deciding to sh!t on Superman's bio parents AND the Legion of Superheroes (a big part of Superman's lore).

Taking the wrong inspirations :francis:

Craahing out over Jor-el:scust:

Make it make sense:mjlol:

Theres literally no way you could like any comic book movie if this is such an issue for you. This is a 1 on a scale of taking liberties with characters. Especially considering how irrelevant Clarks parents are.

Superman's biological parents are NOT irrelevant. Without Jor-El, Superman wouldn't have been sent to Earth in the first place (thus no "Superman").

And yes, I'm "crashing out" over Jor-El. This is like deciding to keep Uncle Ben from Spider-Man alive AND we find out that he's a criminal that's in prison.

I think he'll retcon it with some Brainiac shyt. it could be real, but with Brainiac "forcing" his parents to say it. That way Gunn can save face.

edit: Completely forgot about Zod. He could also have "forced" this message
Gunn has quadrupled down about this shyt nikkas need to let it go:mjlol:

JorEl has been evil in the comics but notice it never sticks or carries into the main continuity as it’s retconed. There is a definitive version of the character which is what DC always falls back to. There are also versions of Superman that are evil/ antihero in the comics but wouldn’t translate well to film.

His kryptonian heritage is equally as important as his human upbringing. With his parents putting out a message as they did and it not being false there is simply no way for him to embrace his kryptonian heritage. It is an integral part of his lore.

Exactly. Some people are saying, "Well, Jor-El was evil in Smallville" or "Kryptonians were bad in John Byrne's comic run". OK, and? That's NOT the general or standard depiction of either Jor-El or Kryptonians (outside of Zod and his followers).

I think Gunn is doing this because he prefers the belief in "found family" being greater than biological family. A common theme throughout his work.

I personally don't believe that you have to diminish Jor-El and Lara in order to glorify the Kents. All Gunn had to do was make the message from Jor-El and Lara more simple: "We love you and wish the best for you on Earth". There doesn't need to be a greater purpose (good or bad) attached to the message.

Exactly I am not really a fan of JorEl placing expectations on his son besides live well and survive. This is a man whose whole world was ending and he only wished for his child to survive as any loving parent would.

When we found out there was parts of the message initially missing in the movie I got so excited because I thought Gunn would take inspiration from birthright and at the end of the movie the hiding message would be similar to the ending of birthright and we would have this grand epic and emotional scene.
