After taking time to think on it, i actually think James Gunn did a decent job here, The humor wasn't too overdone like with the Guardians.
The major flaw with this movie though, was the same flaw most people had with Iron Man 2. Movie doesn't stand on its own. Feels like it was designed to tease future projects instead. Wasn't a superman movie. instead it was a DC movie superman ass the lead. this was designed to make you wanna watch, Supergirl, justice league, MR Terrific and whatever else. (apparently Jimmy Olsen is getting his own spinoff from this too.)

If you complained that black panther took a backseat to the rest of the cast in his first movie. You should feel the same way about this one. Superman got his ass beat for 90% of the movie, was even captured and sidelined for a good 20 minutes of the film so another character could get his moment to shine. James Gunn claimed in interviews that he didn't need to see another origin story for superman. I understand that was a statement made purely for financial reasons now. He didn't want to do that because he wanted to be able to tease for future dc projects. I would be interested to see the next one focus more on superman next time. Because outside of that everything else worked for me.
I disagree to the extent that it was a Superman movie in world where these other characters exist rather than a DC movie. We didn't interact with the characters unless they were related to what Superman was doing, e.g we didn't see the fight with the interdemensional imp aside from it being a background to Superman and Lois convo.

We can say it was used to tease future projects, but if the characters were ignored, we have to then hand wave in future movies where the hell were they when the kaiju was attacking Metropolis

If it was limited to just the big Kaiju fight scene that would make sense.

but giving a non starring character their own solo action sequence is generally only done in movies that are trying to hype up spin off films. Especially when its a non recurring character who isn't even part of the main cast in the whole trilogy. Jimmy Olson getting attention would be acceptable because he will probably be in the next superman movies. Giving Mr Terrific a solo action sequence is basically just an in move teaser for his eventual spinoff. Similar to the hallway scene for black widow in Iron Man 2, We all knew she wasn't gong to be in Iron Man 3. Mr Terrific isn't going to be in Superman 2, the attention given to her and him was just to tie his movie into future projects and tease them.

They literally had to fridge Superman for that 20 minutes of the movie.(write him out temporarily) In order to let a none main cast member shine. Makes no sense other than to tease a future project. The scene was great don't get me wrong, but Any decent editor would cut that out in order to keep the pacing and focus on superman for his own film.

I didn't need the first superman film of the DC universe to be an advertisement for future DC films

(I still liked the way James Gunn approached how the characters were the portrayed and feel like he can make a legit classic, but this wasn't it.)

Also when people complain about "why didn't the avengers show up?" like they do in every movie. You aren't supposed to just actually have the avengers show up to save the day in every movie. You are supposed to write a plausible explanation for why they couldn't show up.
Otherwise every movie you make will be an avengers movie. and there would no point to any solo films.

Gotham is a shythole so obviously Batman and the family are handling all of those threats, most of which are street level. The Green Lanterns aside from Guy are out in space doing all types of things. Wonder Woman has her own shyt. The Flash has Central City.

Metropolis has a lot of the next level threats but Superman can usually handle them. If it's something that is a true danger to the world that's where we see the Justice League have to come together.

After third watch, I love it even more.

I'm only slightly more forgiving to the Jor-El shyt, because if you really listen to the whole speech it's just very extreme but he's basically saying 'help and inspire them...with force if necessary ".

It's not the direct enslavement (or replacement) which Zod is going for.

To be clear I still intensely dislike it, and prefer a Kal-El who prides in being their son and a Kryptonian, but I'm willing to see where Gunn takes this. I know he's said he won't backtrack, but Zor-El is featured in the Supergirl flick so I'm sure he'll do something more with the legacy.

Think I'll end up ranking this as my third favorite Superman film:

OG
Man of Steel
Superman 2025 and BvS (ultimate cut) are battling for third.

He said that he doesn't really like teleportation and time travel related stuff when asked about if he would incorporate the Legion of Superheroes into the DCU.

Which is ironic considering that there's teleportation in the Superman movie (apparently that "doesn't count" according to Gunn lol) and he greenlit a Booster Gold show (a character that uses time travel). So why draw the line at the Legion? Odd.

I've talking about it enough in this thread already but I disagree with the statement that Superman's Kryptonian background "never mattered".
Tbh, I've NEVER liked the Legion books myself.

Too many teens/young adults written by people far from that era.

The way other comic readers feel about the Inhumans is exactly how I feel about the Legion of Superheroes books.
