I think that Nolan Batman movies have distorted the public perception of the tone of comic book material.
THOSE KEATON BATMAN MOVIES
WERE SERIOUS TONED MOVIES
SO WERE BLADE AND THE XMEN MOVIES
It's wasn't until Frank Miller and Alan Moore started writing in the 80s that some comics were being written with a more stoic tone, but even after that period writers started adding humor back into it.
NOT TRUE.
BATMAN STARTED OFF DARK.
HE USED TO CARRY A GUN
AND ALSO USED TO KILL
THE EDITOR EVENTUALLY
FORBID BOB KANE FROM
KILLING AND BRANDISHING A GUN
AND THATS HOW THE NO GUN/NO KILL
BATMAN BEGAN
THEY BEGAN TO TAKE
IT BACK TO ITS ROOTS
IN THE 80S
