I think that Nolan Batman movies have distorted the public perception of the tone of comic book material.

THOSE KEATON BATMAN MOVIES
WERE SERIOUS TONED MOVIES
SO WERE BLADE AND THE XMEN MOVIES

It's wasn't until Frank Miller and Alan Moore started writing in the 80s that some comics were being written with a more stoic tone, but even after that period writers started adding humor back into it.

NOT TRUE.

BATMAN STARTED OFF DARK.
HE USED TO CARRY A GUN
AND ALSO USED TO KILL

THE EDITOR EVENTUALLY
FORBID BOB KANE FROM
KILLING AND BRANDISHING A GUN
AND THATS HOW THE NO GUN/NO KILL
BATMAN BEGAN

THEY BEGAN TO TAKE
IT BACK TO ITS ROOTS
IN THE 80S

You realize 1966 Batman under Adam West was a parody that was a worldwide phenomenon.

Quips and lighthearted are engrained in superhero fiction. It’s multigenerational
Adam West's Batman was TOO silly and campy. Yeah, the show was initially a hit, but it got stale pretty quickly and was cancelled.

West's Batman also ruined the perception of Batman to the general public for decades (until the 1989 Batman movie).

Good movie. I had zero expectations but I think they nailed it.
Green lantern looked like shyt tho, they need to recast him asap. That guy looks like someone’s dad got off the couch and the ring just fell into his hands.
I’m here for a super girl team up. I can’t believe they haven’t tried to get her apart of all of this before now
Yea DC needs to proceed with caution lol. Don’t rush a JL movie no time soon. I say 2030 at the earliest let’s flesh out the other members first. I don’t even like Gunn but I like where this is heading.

This movie finally made me accept that this shyt isn't written for my generation anymore.

Everything has to be quips and lighthearted and superficial. Everyone is a clown. Do people really behave like this?
Yea I’m sure you don’t want to hear this but I’m afraid you watched it wrong. Comic book movies are not supposed to be super serious aimed at adults only. They are for kids and adults. Always have been. Those Nolan Batman films were great but let’s not get carried away, these are family movies.

Sure, but there was also plenty of silly stuff in those movies.

For example, Jack Nicholson's Joker and his crew were messing up an art museum while dancing to Prince lol.

IN THE 80S

It was in the '70s under Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams when Batman became serious again in the comics.

However, '70s and early '80s Batman generally wasn't brooding and "grimdark" like later iterations of Batman.

Well, the Green Lantern in this movie isn't going to be the main Green Lantern going forward in the DCU.

That will be Green Lantern John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre), who will make his debut in the upcoming show, Lanterns.

Oh good because that guy ain’t it. Also I’m surprised they are still doing the GL show that’s what’s up

Ruined? That’s a bit of a stretch imo.

The Superfriends era which is probably the most popular iteration up until the Burton era was just as camp but is where stuff like the Hall of Justice and Wonder Twins come from. Stuff people remember fondly.

Superheroes are more malleable in their depictions. We will probably never get another Batman and Robin but stuff like Gotham , Brave and Bold, and Teen Titans Go will still get made with Batman characters.

Not a stretch. Adam West's Batman is iconic, but that campy version is what most people for over 2 decades thought Batman was.

Most people didn't take Batman seriously until the '89 movie.

Yeah, of course, those who grew up with Superfriends mostly look back at it fondly. As most people do with their favorite childhood shows.

Superfriends is very corny and dated by today's standards, though. The Justice League cartoons of the 2000s are a million times better than Superfriends lol.

Yes, superheroes are definitely malleable.

For me personally, I think that Bronze Age Batman is the best balance. He was serious but also had a lighthearted side. Also, he was like a James Bond/Ethan Hunt-type of character, which I think fits Batman perfectly.

But I think the corniness is part of what makes these iterations stick.

I mean in comparison to Ledger’s Joker, Nicholson’s Joker makeup, long barrel gun, and ‘Party Man’ dancing looks corny but in your eyes that’s the “serious” version.

Huh? I literally made a post talking about Nicholson's Joker a few posts above lol.

Anyway, Nicholson's Joker is definitely sillier than Ledger's Joker. However, Nicholson's Joker wasn't totally campy. He was still very much a threat.

He was totally camp and silly. Poisoning beauty supplies and deadly gas parades aren’t anything you wouldn’t have seen in the campy silver age or Adam West version.

The threat was how the movie executed it.

Joker’s goons in Keaton’s version doing backflips and karate is more in line with Power Rangers goons than Ledger’s hostage shooters.

So Cal
I think that Nolan Batman movies have distorted the public perception of the tone of comic book material. Comic books have always had humor in them (it's why they're called comic books). Some lay the humor on thick, Deadpool, Spider-Man, Squirrel Girl, some use a more dry humor, Superman, Batman, Daredevil. It's wasn't until Frank Miller and Alan Moore started writing in the 80s that some comics were being written with a more stoic tone, but even after that period writers started adding humor back into it.

For the most part, if you don't like humor, comics aren't that genre for you.
The Nolan movies had jokes in them.

It's not the jokes that turn people off. It's how corny, excessive, and unfunny they are.
