Nintendo is beloved; it's the Disney of gaming

the peak of family friendly franchises and at home multiplayer

it would need multiple franchise tanking to not be successful :manny:

hardcore gamers dont have a buy in franchise even though the direct was trying to appeal to that population of gamers with elden ring, Cyber punk, the dark souls multiplayer game and Final Fantasy ...

Nintendo didn't even go to a signature system seller like
a new animal crossing or zelda at launch :mindblown:

I dont think an animal crossing would be a system seller over mario kart. Mario kart has been around since like 93 and the last one sold 70 million copies or close to it, at almost full price outside the bundles.

the one area where nintendo has just never failed in (outside 3ds) is handhelds. They’ve owned the market for close to 40 years now. People can say way they want but the switch is seen as a handheld successor before a home console successor

a lot of people bought a switch for animal crossing cause of covid - people that never own the system got on the hype train

The switch was the wii on steriods in getting people in the eco system who are not traditional gamers

mario kart world safe but i think a lot people would been excited by a more expanisve animal crossing

Animal Crossing: New Horizons with 31.18 million. Despite being less than a year old, New Horizons is on track to become the Switch's best-selling game ever. Around 39% of Switch owners, in fact, own a copy.

I think you do an animal crossing when you have a larger installbase.

Also like you said, the animal crossing explosion was in-part due to the pandemic and lock downs. I myself probably wouldn’t have bought it otherwise

It sold that much because they had actually had them in stock. You couldn’t find a PS5 in store for almost 2 years after it dropped.

For comparison I walked into a random Target on launch day and copped a Switch 2.:russell:

I wonder if software is going to be strong for it. The launch window software seems like it's lacking. I have no clue why Nintendo didn't provide dev kits earlier to publishers because it feels like they're going to be missing a lot of key games. I thought it was concerning watching summer gamefest and rarely seeing NSW2 logo for games.

Nintendo is always like this. Most launch games likely ports. At least this time the Mario Kart was a new game.

will def be interesting to watch how nitnendo navigate the software rollout now that they have to provide nintendo online with GameCube games and all the Wii U (and Switch 1) games are now available via backwards compatibility. They don’t have those gap fillers anymore unless they dig more into the DS software

That's my main concern. Moving a ton of hardware is great, but what about software sales?

People forgot that Wii sold a ton of hardware but was very weak in software. I don't have the numbers, but both Sony and Microsoft made more money than Nintendo that gen due to Nintendo being much weaker on software. It's going to be interesting to see how Nintendo navigates with the industry changing. Games are taking longer to make and niche titles are now becoming more mainstream. Xbox Series S should help them with devs being more comofrotable working on weaker hardware but they can't afford to miss out on certain titles imo.
