US student visas for Indians fall 61% last year, only 22,000 issued, colleges sound alarm

The number of international students coming to the United States fell much more sharply last year than people had realised, according to a new analysis of US Department of State data by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Between May and August 2025, an important period for university enrolments, the US issued 97,000 fewer F‑1 student visas worldwide. This was a 36 per cent drop compared to the same months in 2024.

A preliminary survey of colleges conducted last year had suggested a 17 per cent fall in new international-student enrolments. The new visa figures are far more worrying. India, the top source of international students for the United States, saw an especially big drop. American consulates there issued only about 22,000 student visas over the summer, a decline of more than 60 per cent.

The global drop in visas is likely linked to a nearly month-long freeze on student-visa interviews that the State Department imposed in late May. But it may also reflect falling interest in studying in the United States after policies from the Trump administration, including cancelling the legal status of thousands of foreign students last spring.

“Although many of those visa cancellations — which often appeared based on minor run-ins with the law, such as traffic violations — were reversed, they sparked alarmed headlines worldwide,” the analysis said. Other policy changes, such as a proposed time limit on student visas and reforms to a federal programme that lets recent graduates work in the US for up to three years, may have made students rethink their plans. Threatened cuts to research funding also led some colleges to reduce graduate admissions.

I heard that Canada increased their student visas

Last week, the homie spoke with a hiring manager at Nvidia for an incredible role.

Did zero prep, tried to postpone at the last minute.

Said the hiring manager actually gave him honest feedback during the interview.

He sent me the screenshot confirmation.

Visited him. He had the giant corkboard and whiteboard out.

Now he serious.

Didn't somebody in here say that just because you get interviews doesn't mean you're getting hired? I get it, recruiters are still looking for candidates and you need to be prepared and ready when opportunity comes knocking but isn't the main premise of this thread that for most opportunity is not knocking as often at the moment? Seems the same for your friend

Odd as this was in the footer

This post is made up.: no such layoffs happened. The account itself confirmed it is intended as satire - though the post fails to disclose the satire nature:
Breh I knew it was way too far fetched to be true. Cuz if this did happen like I said they'd be calling back some them they laid off to come fix the mess

This is the silliest most obvious piece of commentary I can imagine. The opportunity is the point.

Incorrect. That's always been my point.

He still has opportunities with a AAA gaming company, a FAANG, a finance company, an AI company, and more.

He didn't get ghosted or lost in the sauce, he just slagged off the Nvidia opportunity because, as I stated before, he is used to being "that guy" and didn't believe he needed to prep for it. He was working on his motorcycle and smashing hoes instead of prepping. Finally caught up to him; though, I'm sure he will be perfectly fine in the end (which is why him not prepping is a problem, there's no incentive).

The fact it was the hiring manager directly who let him know what it was means the opportunities was there and he just didn't take it seriously.

My point has always been to be serious and prepared. Or so skilled that it doesn't matter.

Article is poorly written ("the September proclamation") and looks suspect.

Is this actual legislation? No name or house resolution number was mentioned.
