I never have, but I plan on doing just that this fall/winter. I'm going to upgrade my 20+ year old Hogan Apex Plus irons to a combo set of their newest irons. Since they're direct to consumer now, that's my only option. I can make fitting adjustments when I order though, so I'll be getting an "iron fitting" from a local shop here for $75 before I order. Just to figure out if I need any lie adjustment and nail down my shaft options.

Gotcha. The 3 big places offer free VIP fitting experiences if you purchase more than $500. Obviously the irons would do the trick. Hmm.. I'm gonna have to think about this.

That's what I did when I got fitted for my driver. I knew I was getting a new one, and knew I needed xstiff, so it was just an excuse to hit several demo models and find the one I liked. Irons are a little more detail intensive I feel.

Yea my hybrid. Only because .. (read below..)

.. I can't hit my long irons for shyt. I dont know what it is. :francis:
Where do you have the ball in your stance? Biggest mistake I see players make with a long iron is playing it too far up and trying to sweep it like a driver.

I hit them all well. 6 is about 185-198, 5 is 200-210, 4 I rarely give it a full on swing, but I can hit it up to 220 if it’s flush. Driver is 9.5.

Edit: 4 is probably low 220s but like I said I never really give it a full swing.
Sounds like you're working with a massive gap between your driver and 4, i doubt the hybrid is going to fill it.
I would look into hybrid 2, 3 and 4 irons. You could probably get a hybrid 2 lofted lower than your 19 degree, so that fills that spot in your bag, then a hybrid 4 in the higher lofted range, maybe 22 and think about ditching the 4 iron.
The thing with hybrids though, and fairway woods for that matter, is that the degree of loft really only matters in comparing lofts across the same brand.
I would go somewhere that has a range or an indoor simulator, and try out a 2, 3 and 4 hybrid at the same time, same session, check your distances, and then buy based on where they line up with your 4 iron.
The hybrids are way more forgiving off the deck than fairway woods.
I carry a 3 wood and a 7 wood, and a 5hybrid and a 4 hybrid. If you knew the degrees on them youd say
:mjtf:
But what matters is I have about 15 yards between each of them, and can blast them off the deck.
When I'm walking the back 9; hungry; too hot; tired; or too high, I feel much better with a 5 hybrid in my hand than a 4 or even a 5 iron.
I can choke down on it and give it a light swing and get the same carry, not as high of a trajectory, BUT
I can blast that thing out of rough like its a fukking aluminum baseball bat.
I carry the 3wood and will only use it off the tee if there is trouble in my landing zone or a narrow fairway--or OB on either side.

Actually I think this might be it. I always learned that the higher the iron, the closer to my lead foot that the ball should be.

It should, but only by a ball or two. Not several inches.

I've found the biggest key to limit the sweeping, etc problem is to focus on keeping your weight on your left side throughout the swing.

I'll have to try that if I get the full set then.

One thing my high school coach taught me which has turned out to be my most valuable piece of advice ever, is learn how to hit the same same club a multitude of different distances. We had plenty of practice rounds where he only allowed us to bring 3 clubs with us and play 9 holes with only those three clubs. So I learned how to hit a 7 iron 130 yards consistently for example. A normal 7 is gonna go 178ish. Side note but I played this weekend and was in the trees to the right on a hole with about 130 to the center of the green. Hit a low cut 6 iron pin high about 20 feet to the right (I three putted, but that’s not the point :wow:) Basically the point I’m making is I can finesse my 19 degree hybrid anywhere from 220-250 comfortably. The gap between my driver and 4 iron is something I’m comfortable with right now :yeshrug:

A 3 wood has always been the most intimidating club to hit for me for some reason which is why I haven’t played with one in the bag for like 10 years. And I want to challenge myself to become comfortable with one now. Mishytting a driver that only rolls out 220 but still having a shot at hitting it on the green on a par 5 280 out is something I dream about right now lol.

Btw playing 9 holes with only three clubs is fun af :banderas:

Try playing it more center and striking down on it like you would an 8 or 9 iron. You still wanna hit ball then ground.

like breh said below me, still shift your weight but try to keep a little more weight on the left side throughout the swing.

They're different than irons or drivers.
Always remember they were designed to hit it off the deck: they have too big of a head to swing down on and take a divot like an iron, but again, youre hitting it off the ground so youre not swinging up with it like a driver. The swing image is: youre sweeping the ball off the grass.
If youre hitting it off a tee, tee it low like an iron. When you address it, center of your stance. Ground your club then make your grip--youll probably need to back off it--youre going to want to make a full swing and its a long club.
Most important thing is don't rush your take away. Let that club head come all the way back, full turn, back to target: coil it up, but slowly, because youre going to need to almost finesse it off the ground.
When you come down, sweep it, don't swing down on it. Just like with your irons youre thinking: down, and with your driver youre thinking: up. With this youre thinking: level.
You just gotta commit to it being a different swing.

Appreciate it bro. I’d love to be able to use it Off the tee too when I’m playing a tight hole and not lose like 40 yards of distance like I do now.

What kind of 3 wood do y’all play? I haven’t carried one in a minute but I have an open slot in my bag now and am thinking of filling it with a 3w.

Or if y’all have a better suggestion for a different club to fill out my bag other than a 3w? Right now I have a driver, hybrid (19 degree), 4-PW, 50, 54, 58, putter.

I have a TaylorMade M2. Great club off the deck or teed up.
