nope
a genre, that used to appeal to everyone, has been hi-jacked by a group of fringe fans, and the Japanese studios cater to this very small collection of fans at the expense of people like me.
it's actually the other way around. The world doesn't revolve around anime avatars. The Japanese developers could have easily came up with the Mass effects or fallout 3s of the last gen, but they catered to the fringe base.
I gave up on jrpgs after suikoden 3, that was already stripped down enough (world map gone, exploration gone). Mass effect 1 the rpg I played in a long time, and it was a breath of fresh air. Everything I liked rpgs was back and in full force, the took all that away with me2 but that is another story.
the j-devs took away the things that I liked (custom builds and sense of adventure and exploration), and stripped it down to cater to the anime avatars who like cut scenes, love stories, "waifu", and "cutesy" garbage.
that's why from soft is king because that don't cater to.that crowd.
