The absence of Funk's influence is a big reason for the disconnect between old and new Hip Hop.

unless you can prove it physically your opinion hardly holds any weight in here

computers got rid of funk and soul

that hank williams Jr song isnt even close to what traditional country sounds like ... not even 25% close :russ:

most people cant write a good song to save their selves...and most people that can write an average song have no rhythm and dont realize their song is trash
combine that with the fact that nobody can plan an instrument or knows basic theory/ has a soul to begin with ... and you just have fragmented people making bullshyt ass music. Even in the genres where they actually play music decently, they are ignorant to other types of music now. So they become very one dimensional and stagnant... Instead of learning and having an open mind they just reject everything around them and stay in a small box able to play instruments for nobody. Most of the time when you speak to a DJ or beatmaker, they will try to pretend like they know music and theory ... but all they know is the records they've bought and the stories they've read on said artists. It's complete clown shyt to be honest, Most of the singers out are a living breathing experience of not being shyt. They dont know music, and don't have the edge because they lie to themselves. They are backup singers with an internet connection. They don't want to make good music, they want to make music right now regardless of circumstance and get applause for average shyt. Janelle Monae's first CD is an example of this.... you can tell she took her time and it was masterfully crafted. She stayed true to herself and her lane. The 2nd CD wasnt tight at all and had no direction.... just people playing shyt and her wailing over it. It wasnt tight because she let it be that way. ALICIA KEYS is a prime example of this whole post, a classically trained ... platinum, light skin broad who smashed shyt on her first album... so why are you dating a weak ass producer that sampled wutang for your first album...now she's dating the peak of trash fisher price beats in swizz beats. SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE CLASSICALLY TRAINED ONE HERE. Both of her men are complete trash and run her life from a production standpoint. She has no idea how to put a CD together despite being trained professionally in music. A complete waste of talent and a joke, like most people are this generation. She has just been a mess for years now, someone that is classically trained to kill shyt. That's where we are at .... no imagination, no soul, no experience to write, no care in the world. Just deflections and finger pointing ... That's why Bruno Mars is a culture vulture... not because he does black music and tries to give it credit... but for the fact that he's a karaoke artist. He always has been, he might try to learn trashy guitar and a few piano chords now... but he's way too late for that. His entire catalog will be someone elses writing and structure... he has absolutely no soul within music.

That's true, but I think labels are scared to do something different when they put a lot of money into an artist, so they force the artist to do the same old thing. It's always been like this, that's why most of the new sounds come from people who either got so big they can do what they want, or from no name artists who are allowed to do that.

In this day, it may not be a label, but its social media, people are scared of being called wack for being different. The only ones who can do this is those who don't rely on music for a paycheck, which is not many.

when we say there's no funk in modern hip hop, it's really how danceless shyt has become. Compared to something like this.

I don't care how old you are. If you're Black and have any sense of rhythm, this shyt WILL get you moving, especially toward the end when Tip gives the beat that extra knock to it (from 3:30 forward)

I can 100% agree on that but to expand on the label thing... I dont think its 100% the labels killing music. I think the bar is just so low as to what you need now, I cant dance for shyt but I can make a dance record and you can put dancers behind me. Boom 80% of my fans will ride for me being a great dancer because they dont know any better. There is just no effort on the artists part to be anything besides a face making money. Ed Sheeran is killing the game playing like 5 chords only because nobody else can. So now he stands out as some icon because the bar is so low. I think the label will over market and make it bigger, but its the artists who aren't really coming to play ball. Its like if no superstars were in the NBA ... we would start thinking Jeff Teague and Bradley Beal was the best shyt after awhile, and people would accept that. New ball players would want to be Bradley Beal instead of being completely legendary. Because if Bradley Beal's skill level is all it takes to net 100 mill then who cares. The fans fukk it up the most because they dont know whats going on. So they uphold bullshyt really, and this brainwash effect happens where masses of people start believing the whole weak structure and they fight for it. Its really not that hard to pick up a bass and count evens or odds... a piano is just 7 pianos next to eachother... its not really hard to learn how to play. Alot of people are missing, why they want to play. Do you want to learn piano? or is piano your escape? That's the difference in sound that most of these robotic artists lack. There is no desperation in music

dope thread made pretty much unbearable to read all the way through by the posters in here. there are 10,000 different half-assed arguments going on in here so i'ma just leave it at this.

the funk is everywhere. you can make a record like the turtles funky if YOU got the funk. most these guys now have zero funk.

there are different kinds of funk(yness) for different types dance. You have head nodding, bounce, layed back, fast moving (new jack swing type funk). David Banner explains it perfectly right here

as does Dougie Fresh right here (gogo funk which directly influenced bounce music, miami bass, crunk and trap)

in my opinion.. what happened was... every once a while.. you would get a simpleton rapper with a cool single word rhymes and it was dope.. and then it became a trend.. and now everyone raps like it..

I think this has to do with two things. 1) Sample-based production really overused a lot of stuff to the point where it was and is a lot harder to create anything fresh that someone else didn't already flip, maybe even in the same way another producer would do it, without knowing. 2) It's increasingly difficult and expensive to get samples cleared. There will never be another Bomb Squad. De La Soul's first 4 albums could probably never be made now.

Ironic enough, "Paul's Boutique" was the last album to get away with being able to have a sample heavy album when the Dust Brothers did their production for them. And De La felt the pain on the 1st one when they sampled Sgt. Peppers.

@IllmaticDelta caught all types of bodies in this thread :salute:

too many people don't understand the essence of funk and think it's just a formula that they heard on old break records. The essence of funk is the reason why Black HBCU bands sound different from white marching bands

and the same reason why white synthpop sounds stiff

compared to the afram edm made on the same hardware/software
