first of all stop saying BS degree, BS means bachelor of science, the degree you say to get, and youre just speaking in terms of today when im trying to put you in perspective of why humanities exist in the first place. without philosophy, we dont have math. without the relationship beetween math and physics, you dont have sciences. Everything has its place.

I would never pay money for a non engineering degree though :mjpls:
ok...and philosophy died off when physics and neuroscience started kicking them when they were down.

Its like religion, the first failed science. It tried to explain shyt...then we got philsophy. They tried to come up with some more things and hit a wall. Therefore biology, chemistry, physics...and now, neuroscience is killing off psychology.

philosophy is merely an attempt at humanizing objectivity. or the pursuit of social efficiency (read that how you will).

Everything definitely has its place...but that doesn't mean its THEREFORE equally valuable.

I NEED some of you all to fail.

We're not on the same level and its in my favor that some people don't recognize that. :obama:

@Eric Blair Whats your opinion on an Accounting degree? :manny:

I told my average white boy friend to do it when he didnt know what to do. GPA and internships/networking are king in those management schools. Depends on where you go but I would recommend it. My stepmom is a CPA. my dad is a lawyer. When they married he made twice what she made, now she might make twice what he makes. Do the 5 year MS if offered. The work is very exciting and you will never be bored. Get good grades though. You can get into fortune 200, IB, all that from the big 4 especially and with the degree in general.

Couldn't that be said for any field of knowledge? I just read about a 13 year old boy who taught himself how to build batteries and generators and is now sharpening his knowledge at MIT. I don't think the self-taught argument vs STEM thing is valid. Most of those STEM degrees don't exist without nerds and self taught scientist creating the fields in the first place.
no, he's not at MIT.

Unless he's a fulltime student, you're talking about that african kid who build the windmill.

He did a summer program and they just sent him back.

regardless, I don't see what beign "self taught" has to do with this.

Theres still a process to the madness and rules of practice to be adhered to.

That 13 year old is providing more direct value than a handful of english majors.

Thats cool if you want to major in english...but don't act like you deserve something because of it.

Yea you must be purposefully trying to not understand what Im telling you. I already said you were right like 6/7 posts ago. And My gpa, major, and SAT are better than yours. One man's ability is no threat to another man's

You're confusing what I'm advocating. I'm not saying people should get a job based off their humanities, just that they should learn the humanities. Base level. I think most people should learn trades and skills in HS. No where did I say STEM and trade based jobs and skill-sets have no value.

If I were this young man, I'd aim to get my degree and seek to start my own business as the end goal, not be someone's asset like you will be for the rest of your life.
learning the humanities is...meh.

I value them...but i think too much stock is placed in them.

but hey, I get why people take them up. Its less grunt work and heavy lifting.

how is that wrong?

We're just living on a ride of epistemology.

there are sciences who have done all they can do. Philosophy is one of them. Alchemy was one and psychology is about to be another.

Hell, even economics is being replaced by parts of game theory and neuroscience.

Whats fukked up about learning something valuable?

If you want to be valued for your ability to digest literature so much, do it on the weekends if you're just going to bytch about how THE FREE MARKET (:lolbron:) doesn't value your skills.

Major in whatever you want.

BUT

Don't sit here and tell me we're all on the same level.

We're not.

I have a degree in cognitive neuroscience. It isn't replacing Psychology. One explains what happens and the other explains why.

Philosophy is a funnel for science. It's not in opposition. Philosophy is a way of thinking and isn't necessarily taking itself too serious. It's brain games for those that indulge in the sciences.

You keep dehumanizing things and don't understand relationships between things. You think everything is in direct opposition.
