I hate to say it, but paying a workhorse RB in todays climate where qbs get a shytload of cap fraction, is not a good proposition. best bet seems to find a set of complimentary cheap backs and build oline and passing offense to supplement the passing game.
plus by subbing in different backs you keep them fresh and fast.
