It's possible his teacher was from Wano but IMO it's more likely that Zoro is a descendant of someone from there. This is how Ryuma looked when he was alive -

IIRC Ryuma was the character from one of Oda's older works before One Piece. There's a one shot of him out there. The character continues here in OP.
