Detroit Rapper Remains Under Investigation by Michigan Humane Society For Suspicion Of Dog Fighting

Published: Wednesday, August 08, 2012, 5:10 PM *** Updated: Wednesday, August 08, 2012, 6:23 PM By Eric Lacy

DETROIT, MI - The Michigan Humane Society hasn't forgotten about Young Calicoe, a Detroit rapper who created controversy last month when he was featured in an internet video that boasted about dog fighting.*

Detroit rapper Young Calicoe is the target of a Michigan Humane Society investigation into an alleged dog fighting operation in the city's Brightmoor neighborhood.

Kevin Hatman, a humane society spokesperson, told Mlive Detroit on Wednesday that his agency remains diligent in an investigation to see whether or not the rapper and others who appeared in this video, credited to Midnight TV Hood Reality, should face criminal charges.*

"The issue is still ongoing," Hatman said. "There's a lot that goes into a potential dog fighting prosecution. Right now, we're waiting on the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office to make a charging decision."

It's unclear when the prosecutor's office could make a decision, and the humane society doesn't have a timetable set for when it would like its investigation completed, Hatman said.*

The "MTV Cribs"-style video also sparked a Detroit Police Department investigation because it also included footage of what appeared to be a full-fledged cockfighting operation in a Detroit home.

Hatman confirmed the home is located on the 12200th block of west Outer Drive, in the heart of the city's Brightmoor neighborhood.*

Hatman said he doesn't know Young Calicoe's real name, and messages left with the rapper weren't returned.*

Young Calicoe's manager, who identified himself only as "Jason," told Mlive Detroit over the phone Wednesday afternoon that his client will stay patient and let the legal process play itself out before he takes any sort of action.
The manager described the controversial video as simply "a skit" to a music video.*

The manager wouldn't confirm or deny if Young Calicoe has hired a lawyer, but did say he's cooperating with the investigation.*

"That's all it was, entertainment, that's it," said the manager of the video. "He's just sitting back waiting for this to just blow over, so he can eventually talk about it, so there's no unanswered questions."

News of the ongoing humane society investigation comes a day after Young Calicoe confirmed to Mlive Detroit via his Twitter page that he'll host a Sept. 7 battle rap event called "The Mayhem" at a Southwest Detroit strip club.*

The home in question, featured in the video, was raided by the humane society last month and uncovered several pit bulls and roosters, Hatman said.*
Footage of the raid, courtesy of Detroit ABC affiliate WXYZ, can be found here.*
Hatman said he doesn't have specific numbers of animals taken from the home, but said he's under the impression that humane society investigators conducted a thorough enough search to prevent future illegal operations in the home.
"Generally, the cruelty investigators we have don't tell me a lot of details about the investigations; they're very, very tight-lipped about it," Hatman said. "They want to make sure they get all that information to the prosecutor's office, that nothing is getting out that could potentially damage the investigation."
