So what went wrong with Serius Jones?

Let's talk about it.

You have Mook/Lux/Hollow who are in a category of their own. Clips was approaching their status, but he just has way too many losses for many here to put him there. It's time to examine why Serius Jones isn't up there. I'm gonna say his second round against Clips forever ruined his stock. It's one of the worst rounds I've ever heard. It's like no one had an interest in seeing him come back after the Clips battle even though the consensus is it was very a debatable battle. Or perhaps it's because he didn't clearly win his battle at SM2 like Mook & Lux? Mook clearly won, BUT then again no one was trying to see him again after Solomon. Mook's stock rose when those culture vultures came & gave us a rematch no one wanted to see.

Let's get back to Serius though. What happened?

Serius is an anomaly - there's nobody like him. Everybody else needs a LOT of support behind them, while it seems like Serius does what he does for the love. And he seems content to just keep rapping regardless of the reaction he gets. So he definitely has the support of the older heads, like all the URL people. He probably doesn't ask for a lot of money either, seems like he would be easy to work with. I think he's just an older style rapper whos style just doesn't match with the crowd's short attention spans these days. Plus he's not trying to give off the tough guy Tsu Surf image. I feel like Serius is somebody who really knows who he is, and somebody like Surf is really just a living character actor.

And yeah, you're right, that's a long time ago. I'm in agreement with FreshAIG that the performances were sub par. But I don't think that's what battle fans are being sold. The product that they are going to see is the highest quality shyt, they're expecting rappers to take chances and really spit that shyt. Not just some safe, verbal acrobatics shyt. Dudes gotta be taking shots at each other or else battle rap's gonna become one long cypher. I think if there's complaints to be made, that ya, they should be directed at the rappers themselves. But if you were them, you'd probably do the same thing. Try to stay on by giving a good performance but not really go too crazy, just play it safe. It's a kinda weird situation. Because the fans want performances, but they don't understand that it's actually the lower-tier/mid-tier guys that are more likely to give them that.

Idk, I just wanna see hungry dudes rap. That's it.

Then you turn around and make this point, which is perfect and it's a summation of what most of us in here complain about. The top guys legitimately give us one good battle a year combined (like, all the top guys can battle and we'll get 1 or 2 good ones out of 10). That's flat out not acceptable, and I think Verb and Clips at NOME might have been bad enough to set the stage for legitimate new top tier dudes. Those two will never go away, and they'll always be on big cards, but if these mid and low-tier dudes capitalize, even just 1-2 of them, we can get a much needed shift towards a different picture with focused talent.

We basically need a relatively new, sort of unproven dude to beat the hell out of the fading/lazy vets. Anything less isn't enough. Someone needs to body Clips so bad that it's trending on Twitter 2 days later. A lower-mid tier dude has to show up and step on Verb's throat for three rounds straight and leave a footprint in the cement. Anything less will not be enough to shake the foundation of popular battle rap. Anything less will just be another post is another Coli thread about rewatching battles that have 300k views.

I don't think Serius' legacy took that much of a hit until he got snuffed by Math. I remember that most people had him beating Clips' straight after SM2 but after he took that colossal L at SM3, no one thought twice when Clips' started rewriting history and saying that he was "arguably undefeated."

Also, those Vlad interviews did way more harm than good. Serius was talking about how he's got goons that can get to Math, meanwhile, Math was on social media taking the piss.

The problem with the new dudes is they are to timide and humble. As much as I hate TODD he took the right approach. fukk all them toptiers and troll your way into battles. These new nikkas just sit on the bench till Smack throwes them a bone. Goddamn Ty Law been sitting on the shelve for 2 years. Call out nikkas and make them seem like a bytch when they ignore you.
