I'll start by saying I don't think Lux is wack at all, but I am somewhat critical. Just want to share what has been happening in here.
But as for Lux as battle rapper, I think TBZ has a clear split on him lately. I'm not talking about his business/negotiation skills (because that's not battle rap), I'm talking his performances.
One side (
@FreshAIG, others) is pretty much sold on Lux. They accept the modern Lux style, go through the rewatches and pay him homage for doing something that few others can do -- be an intricate lyricist and succeed on the stage.
The other side (me, I think
@Big Jo, others) respect his lyricism but find it to be a little too much. The number of rewatches and the total change of mindset required takes us out of the realm of battlerap and into conscious underground hiphop. Some part of me thinks Lux's rounds would be dope on wax, where putting in that brain work is a little more expected/accepted.
For me, I would never say Lux doesn't attack his opponent.. He just does so in a meticulous manner. His lyrics are a
slow burn, and I consider myself apt at picking up deep lyrics (I was a dude who listened to Canibus after LL, Immortal Technique, Chino XL, Kweli, old Common, etc). I still feel like Lux's rounds are a little bit too much for the stage. We all know damn well that the crowd Lux performs in front of it catching about 50% of his shyt, and that's the shyt he means for them to catch. It takes me legit probably 3-5 watches with rewinds to put it all together. I guess some call that replay value, but it's a little tiring..
and I can assure that nobody gives any intricate bar battle rapper more than 2 listens before they say "this dude is corny."
Lux lives off a high baseline of respect, and that gives him freedom to rap however he wants, while letting the fanbase learn to love it.
