:dead: I get it that people didn't like The Monkey but its one of my favorite horror movies of the year. I like horror comedies alot:manny:

The Monkey seems a bit closer to something from Sam Raimi like Drag Me to Hell, or maybe Evil Dead II. The characters play it straight in those movies, but the supernatural forces are so absurd with their intentions and the way they handle business. I enjoyed the movie more than Longlegs that's just me:yeshrug:

Another favorite of mine from this year is The Gorge. That really feels like an 80s John Carpenter or James Cameron film(I mean Sigourney Weaver is in it:russ:). Switch out Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller for Jamie Lee Curtis or Sigourney Weaver and Kurt Russell or Lance Henriksen and replace the cgi monsters with practical effects from Rob Bottin and you'd have another cult classic:banderas: More true to John Carpenter's movies I don't think it make that much money since it was on Apple+:mjcry: I am looking forward to Black Phone 2 and I think it'll be a hit if its good.

Not this year but somewhere on thecoli people were bringing up When Evil Lurks again. That movie reminds me of The Beyond where crazy shyt happens after the other. I'd say When Evil Lurks has a much better story, but both movies achieved scenes that are shocking to the viewer and stick with them.

Which reminds me....
Any comparison to Raimi's best stuff is high praise for sure. I'm a fan of The Monkey too. This year has been loaded with horror-comedies and Weapons is the only one that made me laugh as much as The Monkey. It carries a lot of the same charms for me that the Final Destination movies have.

The Gorge was cool. I'd like to see action horror get a bigger push, especially with the Alien and Predator franchises making a comeback. There's an adaptation of Basketful of Heads in the works that I have high hopes for in the genre.

I stan Demian Rugna. When Evil Lurks was my favorite horror movie in 2023. Terrified is a really fun movie too, and Rugna had my favorite short in Satanic Hispanics.

I watched The Censor when you guys were talking about it and I really enjoyed it. I think the ending could have been better but it's still a great movie for a first time director. The lead actress was great too.

I've heard of the Video Nasties but didn't know what movies were on there besides The Evil Dead. I looked up the list and was surprised that I saw so many movies that were on there. I don't think some were on there deservingly like Tenebre. I was surprised that there were so many cannibal movies and Italian movies. You'd have to be a truely sick person to look at the list and watch movies from there:lolbron:

So I fell back into the groove I had last summer watching Italian horror movies and banged out some more Fulci movies last week. Of Fulci's films I've watched The Beyond, The New York Ripper, Conquest, A Cat in the Brain, and Don't Torture a Duckling before. All kinds of spoilers for bolded movie titles below.

Zombie / Zombie 2 / Zombie Flesh Eaters 1979

I heard about this movie when I was a teenager around the same time I heard about Cannibal Holocaust. The scene everyone talked about was the eye scene which I watched back then. What they didn't talk about was the fukking Zombie fighting a fukking Shark scene:blessed: That was so good and for no reason at all you got a woman that snorkels topless in the middle of it.

I did like the idea that the zombies were brought to life by voodoo means. That is their origins instead of what has happened since the Romero Trilogy. I was excited to watch this since it was supposed to be the Italian version of a sequel to Dawn of The Dead, my favorite zombie movie. The story, like most Fulci movies I've watched, was nonsensical but I somehow enjoyed the way the zombies looked. I also think the Dr in the movie is the worst doctor on film and I laughed all the way through his scenes after awhile.

City of the Living Dead 1980
Paura-nella-citta-dei-morti-viventi-italian-movie-poster-md.jpg

I actually enjoyed the plot of this movie the most of his movies. I dug the way the movie was split into two main storylines and the two groups met up to face the evil at the end. I also liked that one of the leads was the b*stard cop from Pieces. The bonker scenes in this movie get topped by The Beyond but they're still pretty fun. I'm certain one of the actresses did not enjoy the maggot scene. I also have no idea why all the women in the town wanted to bang the special needs kid that everyone said was :heh:

The House by the Cemetery 1981

I really had no idea wtf I was watching when this was going on. At first I saw the little boy have psychic talks with his friend so I thought, "Ok they got some Shinning going on right here." Yea I spelled it Shinning:birdman:

Then out of nowhere the fine ass staring cat girl from Inferno shows up and says she's their babysitter.

rate-prime-ania-pieroni-v0-746zrry3u84d1.jpg

Then they zoom in on her eyes then the lifeless eyes of a doll, and back and forth for like 20 seconds. I'm like :ohhh: , "She kinda got the same eyes as the doll. They telling us, the evil from inside the doll took human form.":dead:

I was convinced when the lady that got them the house ignored the wife when they saw each other. Then the babysitter doesn't talk like a real human and she was trying the go into the basement thats locked. I was convinced the babysitter was going to try and seduce the husband and make him go Jack Torrance on his family like the last homeowner did.

While I'm here Fulci definitely had an eye thing right? I mean like Tarantino with feet.

Somewhere in the film they open the basement door and the dad has the most over the top fight with a bat I've ever seen. The bat loses enough blood to make Dracula think he needs to go on a diet, and the wife is like, "Kill it, kill it, kill it." Then the next scene it cuts to a guy yawning. That's good comedic timing.

The wife finds a coffin in one of the rooms thats in the ground and goes crazy. If any horror movie falls into "Get the Hell out that House" trope and the family doesn't, its this one. She has a panic attack cause she hears noises and the husband tells her its nothing take your pills. So I'm there like the husband is drugging his wife cause he's in on it:mjgrin:

Sometime in here the lady that sold them the house gets poked up Argento or Halloween style and leaves a big bloody mess that leads to the basement. The husband comes home and sees the babysitter cleaning it up and notices then acts like its nothing:francis:

The movie ends up being closer to a F13th then I had any idea of it being. I actually really enjoyed it more than I realized as I type this up.

Of the Fulci movies that I've seen, this has had the best out there crazy Italian cinematography that I enjoy.

Ænigma 1987
Aenigma-italian-movie-poster-md.jpg

Not his best work but still fun. It's a horror movie that takes place in an all girl college. The movie starts off like Sorority Row(2009) or probably more relevant Carrie cause I turned that Sorority Row bullshyt off after 30 when I watched it on HBO. Not Carrie posse's 1980s Jamie Lee Presley and kills her classmates in ridiculous ways.

There's some outlandish kills in this one and I'm like :mjlol: the whole time. All those damn snails and the actress handled it like a pro so :salute: to her.

Two of the students die and then it cuts to this poster hanging up in the girl's dorm room :dead:

I thought there was going to be a big twist that 80s Jamie Lee Presley and her roommate were sisters because they look alike. Instead the Doctor forgets about 80s Presley and starts banging the roommate. I went from that poor girl having to watch them make out when she studies:mjcry: to that bytch:pachaha:
Between the aerobics professor:why: and the doctor the old dudes in this movie are straight up preying on these horny college girls and the staff is like:hubie: It doesn't bother me like that, but it's kinda funny that they're more worried about them smoking cigarettes.

I'm already in. I've been a fan of Natasha Lyonne since I was way to young to be watching The Slums of Beverly Hills. I should finish up Poker Face.

I'm going to add the rest of Rugna's stuff to my letterbox watchlist.
