Stealing this question from a Reddit thread. We're at about the halfway point for the decade. What's your favorite horror movie of the 2020's so far?

The titles I see in the reddit thread as of now:
- When Evil Lurks
- Possessor
- Talk to Me
- Bring Her Back
- Nope
- The First Omen
- Smile 1&2
- Oddity
- Weapons
- Barbarian
- Late Night with the Devil
- Pearl
- The Substance
- Nosferatu
- Sinners
- Malignant

My take:
I can't pick Bring Her Back, Sinners, or Weapons out of concern it might be recency bias. I think all three are contenders, though. When I think about the movies I've watched the most from this decade, it's a battle among Smile, When Evil Lurks, and Late Night with the Devil. Nope and The First Omen are probably next. But there's one more movie that I've watched as much as any, which isn't listed there. That's X, which I friggin' love because it captures some of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibe for me.

As a matter of fact, I think X is my leading choice right now.

On another note, I love that everyone picked original properties (unless you count Smile 2 but it's a sequel of a 2020 movie, so I don't). There are a few sequels that I like, namely Evil Dead Rise, Predator: Prey, and Alien Romulus.

What yall got? Any surprise picks?

That monologue at the end is an all-timer. The only recent monologue I can think of that's even in the same ballpark is Rebecca Hall in Resurrection. But the rest of Resurrection is kinda slow.

I should probably watch 'MaXXXine' again soon. I saw it last year and felt like it was a bit disjointed. Bro nailed the giallo aesthetic but just something about it felt all over the place to me. I'll probably revisit it to see how I like it on rewatch.

I felt the same way, but I've only watched it once. Pearl grew on me after second and third watches, but initially it gave me a bit of whiplash because of the aesthetic changes from X. So, I wonder if MaXXXine will have that "it's better than I thought" vibe to it.

I feel you.. all three movies looked very different but with 'MaXXXine' I didn't feel the same cohesive level of storytelling was there like the first two. But it'll be on a rewatch soon as I dig into the rest of Sept. and October.

Wild but I had never seen 'It Follows' for whatever reason even after all the hype. This was a dope concept and I think the cinematography stole the show. Some of the tracking shots and the way the camera moves around during the chase sequences, it's high level. I haven't seen any of David Robert Mitchell's other work and looking at his filmography it seems he's still staying under the radar. The acting is also pretty good. My only criticism is how abrupt the ending feels but I don't have a better idea of how you'd handle it with that type of entity. I'd like to see more of this because there's some rules at play here that are worth exploring such as the transmitter still being able to see the entity.

'Drag Me To Hell' is decent but it feels a bit too sanitized for my taste. You can make PG-13 horror and have it feel a lot grittier and dirtier than this does. That makes it sound like I didn't like the movie but I did like it to an extent. Sam Raimi still did his thing with the jump scares and I enjoyed the final act though some of it felt telegraphed. I like a good gypsy curse, there were still some gross out parts with the old woman. One more thing I didn't love about this era of horror was what I feel is the overuse of CGI.
