I remember driving through Chinatown last year when hella shyt was boarded up and the place looked jhi sketchy asf. And yeah that Spanish side of Uptown, most especially Columbia Heights stay being active…Even Adams Morgan still got a couple of hoods left with some activity going on. SE been noticeably a lil bit calmer this year in comparison but they was wylin like crazy last summer tho.
Yeahhh Northern PG been on some fukkery this year too, even Hyattsville been having a steady stream of shootings this summer…Noticeably around the neighborhoods Amherst Rd (where a friend of mine lives) and dusty ass East-West Highway and of course prolly the couple of parts of Landover that share a Hyattsville zip code. I’m surprised nothing ever pops off at PG Mall tho.
PG Mall was where the late University of Maryland basketball star Len Bias's younger brother Jay was shot and killed over a girl, who was working there as a jewelry clerk. And he died at the same hospital his brother Len did, which was Leland Memorial Hospital in Riverdale. This happened about 4 years after Len died. Len Bias was a very humble brother. For somebody who was a star, ready to be drafted, he always waved at me first, whether he saw me on campus, at Landover Mall, at PG Mall, or at the club. He lived in Kentland. and he knew a lot of people I did, but they were a few years behind me, and he respected me for that. I think he also knew that Buck Williams, the biggest basketball star at Maryland a few years before him, was a friend of our family. Len just had this upmost respect for me and my older brother. Me and my brother from my small hood, and only a few cats from his large hood, were the only ones really going anywhere anytime some. Well, I was going somewhere at least before I completely dropped out for about five years...lol. He passed away close to the time I started going back...smh.
When his younger brother Jay was killed, it came on television as a special news bulletin. Then the next day, we were at war in the Persian Gulf. Most of us never even heard of the Persian Gulf. We thought our only threat was Russia. I never heard about Jay Bias' death in the news again. During this time, PG Mall was another one of those places where something may pop off unexpectedly. Brothers from Landover knew this, because like the Bias brothers, they went to Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, which was within walking distance from the mall. But those Seat Pleasant brothers be shocked when they see what could happen at PG Mall. About five years before Jay Bias was killed, I had this friend from Seat Pleasant, who I've known since elementary school. Anyway I was trying to recruit him into Primerica, formally known as AL Williams. Starting at the bottom, we would recruit doing foot patrol, whether it be a park, a mall, etc... My boy, was one of those dumb smart brothers, but he wanted to be more street. We heard AL Williams opened up a new office on 14th St NW. My buddy was talkin about going up 14th Street where I use to live, and disrupt there AL Williams office...where ever that was. He was saying they may take away from our business...lol. I know he wanted to be gangster,, but no way was he going up 14th Street forreal, especially near Chapin St, which was still the hottest part of 14th at the time.
Anyway, me and my buddy was foot patrolling PG Mall one day. Being young, we were mainly going after the young girls. So we approached this cute sister working at a jewelry booth in the center of the mall. Then outta no where, this young hardhead walked up on us, telling us to get the f*** away from his girl, or he was going to kick our ass's. My boy, being from Seat Pleasant, he couldn't accept this happening at PG Mall. So he went back in forth with this little knuckle head. One thing I do remember, my boy could box. And that's what he did, popping that knuckle-head upside the head like he was havin target practice. My buddy was a tall skinny brother, but he boxed since elementary school. Anyway the knuckleheads' girlfriend asked me to stop my buddy. I knew the cops would be coming soon, so I stepped in, grabbed that knucklehead, lifted him off the ground and tossed him. His girlfriend was looking at me like I was trying to hurt him, instead of break it up. She was a cutie pie. Maybe I should have got her number. Anyway, when I tossed this dude, he nearly hit his head on one of the pillars...I think he actually did. Then his eyes became wide open. I guess he felt like he was about to get a worst ass whopping. So I grabbed my buddy, and we split. As soon as we got close to the exit, two PG cops came busting through the doors, with their night-sticks drawn. But we kept a straight face, even though one cop was looking at us strange. Another thing about my buddy, he was never scared of the cops.
Anyway, this is why something like what happened to Len Bias's brother Jay, was bound to happen at that mall sooner or later. That could have been me and my buddy. If that knucklehead had a gun, I'm sure he would have used it. Sometimes, I wonder if that knucklehead was the one that did the shooting. He definitely got his ass whopped in front of his girl that day. I may have told this story before. If I did, my bad.
