Marvel's Luke Cage: Rumors on Villain, Love Interest, and Plot

A purported plot synopsis online reveals alleged details on Luke Cage's origin in the upcoming Netflix series.

It appears Marvel’s Luke Cage villain, love interest, and some plot details may have been revealed.

Heroic Hollywood reports the Netflix series will feature Willis Stryker, aka Diamondback, as Luke Cage’s (Mike Colter) primary villain. Diamondback was reportedly the villain in a 2004 Luke Cage movie script.

Diamondback and Luke Cage were friends who were attracted to the same woman, Reva Connors, who is also the rumored love interest in the Netflix series. Angry that he did not win Reva Connors affections, Diamondback framed Luke Cage for a crime and he was sent to prison, where he would eventually gain his superpowers and escape.

A rumored plot synopsis, that could change, has also been revealed and it appears to stick to Luke Cage’s Marvel Comics story.

SPOILERS ahead ...

“Luke Cage is a former gang member who is framed for a crime. In prison, he volunteers for a medical experiment that goes awry, giving him super strength and bulletproof skin. Using his newfound powers, Cage escapes and becomes a hero for hire. His archenemy is Willy Stryker, a former childhood friend from Harlem. The two committed petty crimes together, and both fell for the same woman, Reva Connors, which led to their eventual falling out. It was Stryker who framed Cage for a drug deal that sent him to prison.”

Recently, State of Affairs’ Alfre Woodard was cast as a prominent politician rumored to be Marvel villain Black Mariah.

Luke Cage will debut in Marvel's Jessica Jones before spinning off into his own series later.

Marvel’s ‘Luke Cage’: Theo Rossi Cast, Rosario Dawson To Reprise ‘Daredevil’ Role

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix’s Marvel series Luke Cage has added two more key players. I’ve learned that Sons Of Anarchy standout Theo Rossi has been cast as a regular opposite Mike Colter and Alfre Woodard in the third series from Marvel’s four-series package for Netflix. Additionally, I’ve learned thatRosario Dawson will reprise her Daredevil role as Claire Temple in Luke Cage. That makes sense since in the comic books, Claire is a romantic interest of Luke Cage. First introduced on Daredevil, Dawson’s Claire also is set to appear in the second Marvel series, Jessica Jones — where Colter’s Cage also will make his debut — before moving to Luke Cage.

Like most comic book adaptations, the breakdown for Luke Cage features fake character names. I hear Rossi was cast to play the “Sonny” role, described as relentless and menacing, smooth and manipulative, street smart and controlling. I hear that in fact Rossi would be playing Luke Cage’s enemy Shades aka Alvarez, a well known criminal.

In Luke Cage, Colter plays Cage, a wrongly accused man who, granted superstrength by a sabotaged experiment, escapes prison to become a superhero for hire. As we previously reported, Woodard is expected to play a version of Marvel villain Black Mariah, a nemesis to Luke Cage as well as Iron Fist.

Cheo Hodari Coker
serves as executive producer and showrunner on the series, produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

Rossi, best known for his role as Juan Carlos “Juice” Ortiz on FX’sSons Of Anarchy, has Low Ridersin the works, opposite Eva Longoria, and also co-stars in the Jon Cassar-directed When The Bough Breaks. He is repped by Greene & Associates and Management 360. Dawson is with CAA and Untitled.

Simone Missick Joins Marvel's LUKE CAGE In Lead Female Role As 'Misty Knight'

Earlier today, Luke Cage got a villain and Daredevil alum, and now the upcoming Marvel and Netflix series has cast Simone Missick as Misty Knight, the former NYPD officer who is gifted a new bionic arm by Tony Stark. Will that be the case in the series too? Read on for details...

According to Deadline, Simone Missick has been cast as Misty Knight in Luke Cage. Whole Marvel has done their best to keep the role a secret (the casting breakdown lists her as "Missy", a woman with a strong sense of justice), the trade reveals that she is indeed playing this well-known comic book character. This makes sense too, especially as Misty is Iron Fist's love interest in the comics. Introducing her here sets the stage for her to later show up in that series if that's the direction they choose to go in.

The site describes her as "a former NYPD officer who gets a new bionic arm by Tony Stark after losing her in the line of duty. She eventually launches a detective agency, helping Cage (Colter)." However, it's not actually made clear if that's just a summurisation of the comic book version of Misty Knight or what we should expect in Luke Cage. Either way, this is a pretty exciting addition to the Netflix series, don't you think? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts on this news below.
