The perks of the Steam Machine for a casual:
  • Access to Steam sales.
  • Access to buy legacy titles not on modern consoles but on PC.
  • Not paying for online multiplayer.
  • Able to run emulators.
  • Access to Xbox titles that mostly pre-date the multiplatform initiate.

The negatives are:
  • Games that run anti-cheat software are out unless you want to turn it into a real PC defeating the purpose.
  • Some popular mainstream games come to console first and have delays for PC availability.
  • Any currently owned console library isn't compatible with the Steam Machine.
  • To continue playing with your current online friends you're dependent on developers / publishers enabling cross platform multiplayer.
  • Lack of much in the way of exclusive content. Popular games are mostly available everywhere.

All in all switching to this doesn't really have many benefits that a casual is gonna care about. Even the greatest not paying for online has drawbacks. If you're a casual still better off buying a PlayStation.

what if I told you someone could own a PS5 and a Steam Machine :mindblown:
Casual. What casual is spending upwards of $1000+ on gaming hardware when they play less than a handful of games a year? You already bought a PlayStation which was about $500 so you go out and spend more than $500 on a Steam Machine to get access to what that you can't really get on PlayStation that matters to you?

I'm glad we figured out that this isn't for the "I only play Madden and COD" crowd

:russ:Being able to access 99% of games for a 1/4 of the price is the number 1 thing casuals care about. Do your research on the epidemic that happened during Christmas when parents were buying emulator consoles for their children, and the consoles had hacked porn games on them. They spend 200 without even thinking about it or doing any research. Just so their child could plug and play old games.
I’ve been looking to purchase a mini gaming. PC so I can play my emulated PS1, PS2 and GameCube games on the big screen and possibly get into Steam as well. Depending on how much this costs the price might be overkill and I also think that controller looks hideous. :pachaha:
:mjlol:Exactly. This is the exact type of customer they are going to appeal to. I never owned a gaming PC in my life and I'm thinking about switching to this (XBOX owner). I can just download the XBOX APP and I'm good.
So they gotta appeal to the console gamers who been on the fence about making the jump to PC
:mjlol:Exactly right. When you really think about it, that was the original pitch for the XBOX.
Steam made their system base of the average specs of their users. This device will sell like hot cakes because majority of their user base use similar specs. They are smart.
:mjlol:Yup. People who think this isn't going to sell in this current era is delusional.

The primary customer for this is a current Steam user not a non-Steam casual. People are saying stuff like Valve goal isn't to sell hardware in this thread when it's absolutely to sell hardware. This is not a threat to Nintendo or Sony. It may be a threat to Xbox but that platform is already in shambles.

Console warrior bubble is strong. They still have not realized their perspective is the minority.
"Valve has entered the Console War"

"DOA if it's not $450"

"it won't sell 20 million"

"what about the casual that only plays console games?"

muthafukkas need to go somewhere with that shyt :stopitslime:
