thats me in a nut-shell...

i buy may one or 2 new games a year...and i own 20+ between 360 and ps3...

im watching this becuz the only system im buying will be the one that allows me easiest (cheapest) access to used games...

im no fan boy. i like both systems and i like games. PERIOD. whichever company allows me to enjoy that the way i want to is where im going next gen....

but for now i dont see myself buying either of these systems for atleast another couple of years...theres a huge used back log i havent played yet and they are still supporting this gen....

so...im good:youngsabo:
what he's not telling you is the used games eco system supports new game purchases. many people but new games and trade them in or sell them to get money to buy more new games.

when these companies act like all used game sales hurt them they're lying. in an ideal world people would all buy new but in reality used game sales support new game sales and then they gut the used game market they're gonna figure that out.

a video game is an expensive purchase that many times gets subsidized by the used market.

I honestly think this is the direction Sony will take.

Yep. And even though it'll probably lead to much the same thing as what MS is doing, its much smarter by Sony and puts pressure on the publisher and MS, rather than themselves.

In other words, Sony is playing chess, MS is playing :usure:

movies typically turn a profit during their theater run all the rest of that is even more profit. even movies that flop in theaters have been saved by the move video release. in the gaming world there are a select few games that turn huge profits like Halo, Gears, Call of Duty, GTA, Madden, Assassins Creed ect. the rest of the games are either make a small profit to break even or lose money. also for the most part game sales are front loaded when the game first hits it does the bulk of its sales in that first month or two.

Isn't this a sign that perhaps devs should allocate their resources better?

It's like they say "ok, we have a few options, we can restrict budgets and focus on gameplay over graphics and hope to sell more units at a lower cost to us thereby increasing our profits, or we can keep our overblown budgets and just charge consumers more... Yeah let's just charge the consumer"

And how do you think EA, Activision, Ubisoft, etc...will feel about not receiving any money from all those used PS4 games?

Well they could always focus on making games with greater replay value, then they wouldn't have to worry so much about their games being re-sold because people would rather keep it instead of getting rid of it.

I remember when people actually liked having a personal game library where you could throw any game on and still enjoy it. Now once you have finished a game or the online community has moved to a new game there is little incentive for keeping a game because it doesn't have replay value. That's one of the reasons the used game market is so strong, because the games just aren't as special as they used to be

You have to look at it from the other side too. Gamers want bigger/stronger/ faster. Look at how much flack Nintendo gets for imploying the strategy you suggested. For them to continue to give gamers the experiences we want and expect, the business model has to change. Either they need to bring a broader audience in or they have to start charging us more. It seems like they will try both.

In my opinion gamers are spoiled. Look how much more we get for our money. The sega genesis was $200 and the games were $40. Budgets were nowhere near what they are today. If they are gonna give me some new experiences, I don't mind paying more. It keeps the industry healthy and alive.

That's what they are trying to do with "always online" games. But everybody hates those.:snoop:

Truthfully the gaming industry is real fukked up right now. Consumers demand for quality that is realistically not cost effective for developers. But it really doesn't help when one of the main bragging points gaming companies push is their graphics and technological advances.

I actually don't mind Nintendos approach, their first party games are some of the greatests games in the industry, I think it would work better for everybody if 3rd parties had the same focus on gameplay over graphics. Just like I think Kinect 2.0 has great potential but most devs won't give it the effort it deserves to make great games.

And kinect is something gamers vehemently resist.

But I agree with you. We all have to broaden our view of games and entertainment. I've been guilty of bashing Nintendo, but their games are almost always a lot of fun.

One thing I'm a bit weary of is that PC gaming sometimes make your console feel archaic. Playing games on my PC and then going to the PS3/360 feels funny. I remember playing UC2 back then in awe of the graphics like :gladbron: and now the same textures after seeing higher res ones look :gag:.

Blurry image quality and whatnot just seem to bother me.

i can only speak for myself but i'm just disappointed in the kinect. the tech demos for the original was :ooh:. then the actual games started coming out and it felt like the wii all over again but atleast the wii had zelda and red steel(which wasn't that bad imo).
