Only thing I completely agreed with him on is the Jay Z lacking solo hit records thing.

Pretty much all of his of his most popular songs right now either feature Kanye or someone else.

While Kanye's most popping songs don't include him. :mjlol:

A lot of people trying to rewrite history when it comes to Jay for some reason.

Jay/Nas/Scarfac/Beanie Sigel/Mobb Deep/DMX and a bunch of others wanted the pen respected first then they worried about hits/singles.

All the producers during Jay run said the same thing. He came through laid his verses and left.

Jay wasn’t sitting around coming up with hooks and melodies. It was a different time, he was gonna drop the best 16’s in between whatever hook someone threw on the record.

His first three singles on Vol 2 was street songs and he went six times platinum.

Can I get A fukk You
Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)
Money,Cash,Hoes
nikka What, nikka Who

All these was street songs getting radio play all over America :dahell:

Simple

Jay Z out is own mouth said.

1. Everyone slept on Reasonable Doubt
2. He led with the wrong single for Volume 1.

So his first 2 albums didn’t break into the mainstream.

Can I Get A was his first mainstream hit. And really that was also because of Ja Rule because that was supposed to be his single.

And in 97-98, LA had a lot of influence in radio. And that song was everywhere. not to mention it was used on a soundtrack to a movie.
Nah, I'm being sarcastic.

On this forum all we hear all the time is how nobody listened to Jay back then in the West and the South.

Now all of a sudden West Coast popularity is what made Jay what he became.

Like make it make sense.

It was radio. Back then radio airplay mattered. :manny:

Jay Z was in the game for almost 10 years and younger artists like DMX and Ja Rule were about to pass him. Can I Get A was a gift. Had Ja not let Jay Z use it for his single, ain’t no telling where he would’ve been musically.

That’s why Jay tried to take out Nas. He was always chasing the number 1 spot in New York.

If Ja kept it then he would’ve been the King of NY ?

or was Jay-Z just propped up by NY media because he was much more active ?

Originally he only wanted to three albums

It’s interesting

the internet
it was not "Can I Get A.."...
it was "Money Aint a Thang"

Can I get A and Hard Knock Knife solidified him being tied in with pop culture

It’s the other way round, Ja was a complete nobody in ‘98 and his verse always got the Styles P “BMF” treatment by radio.

Let’s not rewrite history here, everything just lined up perfectly for Jay in ‘98 and he was bound to blow up the way he did for all the groundwork he put in those two prior years.
