Nah, his first two releases under Def Jam sold 7,000,000 million albums in a couple years.
Lyor always says that X and Jay "saved" Def Jam back then. But damn near every release during the run started around '98 was doing well for the label. The Hard Knock Life Tour, which was basically the Def Jam Tour, was headlined by Jay and made Def Jam mad money. That run after Roc signed there and X got there, was the most successful the label had ever been. They weren't thinking about dropping dude. He was making them way too much money, at the time.
