My recommendation for cars is never to buy new. always buy a good cheap luxury or fun car in cash or with a huge down payment that is 5-10 years old or under 100k miles for 8-20k.

5 years is the point at which the value is highest for a buyer versus initial sale price and future maintenance.

this is an interesting logic.... And someone discussed this on a podcast I heard 4-5 years ago.

The cars now that are "cheap" aren't the same as the cheap cars of the 90's. In the 90's, "cheap" cars didn't have power windows/locks, CD/tape players, some didnt even have air conditioner. You had to buy expensive for all that.

But now, a "cheap" car is gonna have all that, plus mp3/bluetooth etc. The bells, whistles are all there. What more do you really need?

Now it comes down to ride. Yes, some expensive cars ride better b/c tires/suspensions etc are better, but not always.

Roads are rough and unforgiving. And your cheap car is getting beat up by the same pavement, potholes, weather as that $55,000 car next to you.

The trick is balancing these two charts.

Imo there is no reason to buy a new car because it loses 50% of value. If you buy an Asian car that'll last 200k to 300k your in a good position with a 5 year old car

Why pay for cars in cash when that money can do other things for you? This relates to most people too not the rich/super rich who can do,that. When you pay a note esp if your credit right to get the low rates you can use that money to fund other things. That's how me and partner of mines has extra money to do business things online. We use money that could have gone like you said to paying for a car, house/condo, etc outright but instead use it elsewhere. Now for those that are just spending money on bullshyt I,guess but if you can invest it somewhere and potentially make money I think that's better than just buying stuff outright.

Lets also be real the majority of people try to differentiate theriselves when they can on damn near everything and driving a car like in the OP ain't helping to do that regarding cars. People really want to be the best but most only talk it so they can't get to level of comfortably affording big time luxury cars, houses, etc. When they can the majority do so that's what I think it comes down to even though you have a point that cars basically have a lot of the same things. Its like faded glory jeans and some known Levi, guess, established brand. Which one are most people wearing given the choice? Same stuff no difference cause people want the good and or things that make them stand out where most people are jumbled in the middle.

I understand the not buying a brand new car but there are very few cars out there that I would buy that is 5-10 yrs old unless the person knows a lot about cars. I personally like to get used cars 2-3 yrs old but I get it financed at a good low rate and pay it off in no more than 4 yes. But each person is different. My next vehicle is either going to be a 2014 tundra or a brand new Honda civic touring. I just know way too many people that have bought 5-10 yrs old and had too many problems plus the way people commute nowadays good luck finding one with decent mileage

If you can afford a better car, then why not? Coli penny pinchers at it again
People like lying to themselves for some strange reason. Majority of people being real with themselves know damn well they'd get a better prestige car if they could do so comfortably cause the truth is most people do it already in other areas where they can material things comfortably. What makes this any different? We also have to add most of us are from teens to early 40's and you telling me people in these age groups copping certain cars even if they didn't have to? Nah son not on no large scale

Depends on the person. There's ppl with millions of dollars down here in Texas that drive a regular f150 pick-up truck.

If you drive thru most affluent areas here, you see really nice houses with far less comparable cars in the driveway.

I saw a Nissan Sentra a couple days ago that was nice. Pretty cool that I could pay for it cheaply and quickly and have a NEW reliable vehicle as opposed to being in year 4 of a gaudy $600 payment monthly on a Mercedes. And I can get my oil changed for $30 as opposed to $100.

Just comes down to the person

Yep same here a lot of well off people in San Antonio have nice Dodge rams or Ford f150 or tundra. You don't see a lot of porches and even Benz's

My last car payment was 282 when I get my next car I don't want it over $300
