:francis: So they would rather protest for Peter Liang than against the system that made him a so called fall guy.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, carrying signs and chanting in support of a New York City police officer convicted in a deadly shooting.

The crowd, which was predominantly Chinese American, was one of many that rallied in cities across the U.S. on Saturday to protest the conviction of Peter Liang, who is also Chinese American.

Liang was found guilty of manslaughter earlier this month in the 2014 killing of Akai Gurley, an unarmed black man who died from a ricochet bullet that the rookie cop fired in the stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project.

The deadly encounter was one of many in recent months that drew heightened scrutiny amid the heated national debate over how police officers use force, particularly against African American men.

In Los Angeles, demonstrators chanted Liang's name Saturday as they circled the sidewalks in front of City Hall. Cars drove slowly down the surrounding streets, horns honking as supporters held signs out of the windows. At one point, a black-and-white LAPD cruiser whooped its siren in front of the crowd, drawing cheers.

Supporters held signs plastered with slogans written in English and Chinese: "Save Peter Liang," "Accident not crime" and "All lives matter."

Fliers handed out by demonstrators expressed "the deepest condolences" for Gurley's family. But, supporters wrote, they were "equally saddened by the selective and unjust prosecution of Peter Liang, who is made the scapegoat of the police brutality that has long troubled our society."

Xiayi Shirley Zhang, a 27-year-old who lives downtown, stood in front of the LAPD's headquarters, watching the larger group across the street. "Scapegoat" was written in Chinese on one side of her sign.

Zhang questioned why Liang was convicted when so many other high-profile police shootings were "far more obviously" questionable. She also wondered why the NYPD put the inexperienced officer in a high-crime neighborhood.

"It is a tragedy," she said of the fatal shooting. "But to us, with the criminal conviction, the system let us down, let Peter down."

Zhang said she was glad to see "the Asian community showing our muscle," but emphasized that their goal was to promote fairness for everyone, regardless of race.

"It should matter for anyone. It shouldn't just matter for Asians," she said. "Really, all of us are fighting for a fair and just system."

Ken Jun Meng, who lives in Rowland Heights, agreed that Gurley's death was a tragedy, especially for the man's family. But convicting Liang, he said, only made the situation worse.

"Don't make another tragedy. Don't make another sad story," he said. "We came down here for justice."

I'm not buying anything she's saying. She's only up there because one of her own got thrown under the bus and they're confused and think they should've got a white pass because they've been White people's pets for so long. No matter how she tries to spin it, it's a bad look when you rally for some sort of leniency for one of your own negligently killing a black dude but want to say it ain't about that.

What is it about? What is the end game of this rally?? :snoop:
The Chinese folks rallying here don't give a fukk about no Akai Gurley and the black community. Sure they got their own problems but that shyt ain't similar to what black folks deal with.

They acting like Peter Liang is the one that got killed. They acting like dude was possessed by an evil chinese spirit and controlled Peter into going into that building, getting "startled" and then just randomly shooting in the "dark". Dude wanted to be Superman and White folks took him down a peg. Fake ass cry for justice. Fukk outta here.

Didn't make any sense. He is getting a sentence because he committed a crime. The system IS working now, but it's because he isn't white. The only thing they should be protesting then is the unfair justice system and not Liang. And America was built on Manifest Destiny, White man's burden, slavery, and the colonization of land people were already on...pretty sure racism/discrimination is what this country was founded on. Difference is asians came here willingly while most black here did not and the "discrimination" they are protesting against is one man going to jail for killing somone .

Her argument is for all people. She stated that if they're going to sentence him for what he did (he's in the wrong), they need to give the same treatment to all cops as well because too many of them get off the hook.

That's technically what the OP wants, and that's what she's saying.

I doubt that all ever happens though in the time we have on this planet. That'd be like asking you to give the money you're going to spend on your children to help a bunch of strangers instead.

Nobody is going to want to come off their power and privilege 100%, nor do they want to share it. It's just time to get real and deal with it by getting yours the best way you can. Ideals are great, but unlikely in reality.

It'll take a 100% collaborative effort of all races to do something about it, but what are really the chances of that happening. We can't even get along on a message board because we're just trying to compare who has it worse and don't have each others' best interest at heart. Again, another ideal.

I should've mentioned this in my inital post. All Chinese food restaurants, beauty supply stores and nail salons should be boycotted. Not that there wasn't a reason to do it before(all the money they make of us) but now the people who fronted on the idea will look nothing short of stupid if they still say we shouldn't boycott them.

Ima keep it 100, while we need to boycott Asians wholesale, when are we gonna get serious about our real enemy, white people? When are we gonna stop shopping at Walmart and Target? When are gonna stop buying products from Apple and Google? When are we gonna stop using Facebook and Twitter?

Boycotting Asian stores that oppress us is 100% just, but they're small fries compared to the Satan that has literally been murdering black people globally for the last 6-700 years.

She try to run that bullshyt we just want justice nonsense. Had Liang gotten off for killing Akai, they wouldn't be protesting shyt. They'd be glad one of their own didn't have to spend time in prison. fukk em :pacspit:

When are you going to stop driving in cars? Paying taxes? Wearing white brands?Using Internet? Reading books written by white people? Learning in schools taught by white teachers or using white written text books? Oh I know what about living in a white dominant planet? Be realistic breh. Which is more achievable a small community or starting from scratch?

I wonder what nationality are the Hispanics that are marching with them. I doubt they're Rican/Dominican.

I am being realistic. I already done swapped out damn near every non black alternative for a black one. It's one of the main reasons I moved to Atlanta. I buy my tires from a black owned company, my grocery store is black (i drive 30 minutes one way to go their), the dollar store I go to is black. I have a black plumber and electrician coming to my crib tomorrow and my bank and investment accounts are in black institutions. I even buy my Christmas tree every year from a black owned company. shyt even the pest control company I use is black owned.

I'm disgusted every time I'm forced to buy something from a non black person because a black owned alternative doesn't exist which is why I'm constantly bringing up that black people NEED to start more businesses.

But my point still stands, when are we going to get serious about dealing with our real enemy instead of pretending like one of the major tools of our oppression is that we keep them in business.

Most of the signs at the protest said "Tragedy NOT Crime".Obviously what she's saying is false. The sentiment of this protest is to establish this as a tragedy and not a crime.
If the protest were truly what she says it's about they'd be bringing up the names of all the officers who've walked free.Instead they're only bringing up Peter Liang who was rightfully charged.
