Exactly. And the fans back then were extremely critical of rappers who had a wack pen game. I feel like people cared more about lyrics than production In the 90s
No, not true. the first part you said is 100% on point. we cared about production just as much as lyrics. what we cared about most was the overall professionalism of the artist and the song. if by chance the beat wasnt all that. you better rap yo a... off. to bring the songs quality level up to professional standards. if the beat was crazy, you didnt have to walk as far to be at that level but some did it anyway. so it made the song outstanding. this is what you got with the greats.

right now you have hot beats, horrible lyrics. ok delivery.

or decent beat but its the same beat i just heard 2 seconds prior, horrible lyrics, terrible delivery.

I think it's a great year. Peak of rhyming depends on if it's lyrics, stylistically or musically. I do think it's a year I would think of as being in contention because a lot of great ish in whatever way came out that year.
