I know. :lolbron:
It was inspired by the breh @stomachlines thread about Vol 2. I was thinking about how Jay was at his absolute peak on RD. :ohhh:
So was Prodigy on HOE :ohhh:
Nas was still sharp as ever :ohhh:
Andre 3000 ramped up :ohhh:
Was 96 the peak of rhyming? :ohhh:

I'm waiting on someone to make a case for another year. :wow:

for my money's worth, 96' was the like pinnacle of hip hop and rap music. that was like it's peak there'd be just as great years before it but to me, 96' was the last great year
like the whole feel of it, hip hop as a movement all across the map was on point. it started becomin' less and less potent after that
sure, you still had some shyt after 96' but as a whole, it lost some momentum shortly after

Some good cases made for 93/94 and 94. I'm gonna respond later tonight :whoo:

How about 97? If 96 was the peak, you need to show 95 (rise) and 97 (fall) otherwise you'd be talking out your ass

That's 2 missing daps & reps by the way :troll:

Your argument is half complete. Can you do this for 1997 and then we can compare the fall-off?

Nas dropped the Firm flop :scust:
Jay dropped off a few levels on Vol 1 :scust:
Big was still at the top of his game :mjcry:
Rakim was still lyrically sharp on the 18th Letter.
Deck was an absolute beast on Wu Tang Forever.

No.

Rhyming wise, I would argue 93/94(Illmatic, 36 Chambers, Return of the boom nap, Ready to Die, Hard to Earn, Resurrection, Word..Life, Lethal Injection) was. Notice, I'm putting whole albums cause all these joints were rhyming gems and arguably great albums (I left all Behind Bars although I liked that album).

Since then, 2001 (Blueprint, word of mouf, stillmatic, bulletproof wallets) would like a word with you.
Yeah I think albums is the best way to judge. What year had the most elite emcees at the top of their game. That basically what this thread comes down to.

Illmatic is flat out amazing. No argument there.
36 Chambers. All time classic record. But Rae and Ghost ramped up later. Who do you think was in their prime from the Wu on that album?
Return of the Boom Bap was dope. I've never really thought about if that was KRS' peak though :jbhmm:
Biggie was a beast on RTD. Was he better lyrically on LAD? :jbhmm:
Com was a beast on Resurrection. Definitely his peak. I'll respond more later.

I think Guru's peak was more on Moment of Truth.
Lethal Injection definitely wasn't Cube's peak.

2001 :scust:
Jay was coasting on BP.
Nas brought it back on Stillmatic. :ehh:
I'll give you that.
Luda :mjlol:
Supreme Clientele >>> BPW rhyme wise.
