There are plenty of tough guy types like Duce in the NFL who’ve never won a Super Bowl either, a couple of them just got fired from their teams this year. And if that’s the route you want to take, then why not consider Jeff Stoutland? He’s a coach in the same mold as Duce, and he’s the one who is actually in charge of the run game in Philadelphia.

Guys like Moore or Brady have actual experience in running explosive, top-tier offenses in the NFL. Moore turned around a stale, Garrett/Linehan-run offense in Dallas and made it 2nd in the NFL in 2019. Would have been Top 5 again in 2020 if Dak didn’t get hurt. So if I’m looking for an offensive coach to turn around an offense that was 28th in the NFL, or to bring in a new offensive scheme, then I’m looking firstly for people who have experience running top-tier offenses. Moore, Brady, Riley, etc. have that. Duce doesn’t. It doesn’t mean Duce can’t do that, but I don’t know if that’s something I’m willing to bet on.

And I’m saying everybody in the league follows that same formula every year. How many of them have won something? How many of them can take it when the front office and the city start digging in they ass. Who has the support of the team already, is publicly advocating for them, and is a proven leader in front of our current roster?

NFL teams are trying to follow that formula because the league is becoming more geared towards offense every year. Of the eight teams currently in the playoffs now, seven of them have Top 10 offenses. Two of the last three Super Bowl winners were offensive-minded coaches who are (or were, in Pederson’s case) thought of as offensive gurus. Why shouldn’t the Eagles be looking for someone who can give them that when it was their horrid offense that destroyed their 2020 season? Clearly, it’s working.

And if that’s someone I’m looking for, then first and foremost I’m looking for a guy who has experience designing and calling top-tier offensive systems. The support of the players is nice and all, but it doesn’t amount to much if Duce can’t give us a modern, innovative offensive scheme. And that’s my worry – I don’t know what Duce brings to the table in that area. Maybe he can, but I have nothing to go on, unlike with guys like Joe Brady. Per Pederson, IIRC, Stoutland is the one who actually designs the run plays for the Eagles.

So I don’t know what Staley brings besides a tough-minded attitude and the fact that the players like him, which really aren’t my biggest priorities. As a result, I’m more interested in people who actually design and run their offenses.

And just so you know, I’m not opposed to the Eagles hiring Duce Staley if they think he’s best for the job. And I get that it’s not a guarantee that Brady/Smith/Daboll/etc. are going to make good HCs. My concern is that I just don’t know. It’s just that if I’m going to bet on a guy turning around our offense, I’m more inclined to go with someone who effects on their systems I can actually see.

And I’m telling you majority of them are coming up short.

There are pro's & con's to a CEO coach like Duce or a playcaller like Brady.

Ideally, getting someone who runs their own offense like Reid and Payton is what all teams want. I thought we had that with Doug but his inability to rebuild his staff sunk him. Even Sean McVay acknowledged that his staff needed fresh blood last offseason so he hired Kevin O'Connell & Brandon Staley as new coordinators, Doug wasn't willing to accept that reality. Then on top of that you have no idea how a guy like Brady who's only 31 going on 32 is gonna lead his team, relate to his players, etc - it's a risk.

Duce will undoubtedly have that leadership role down, he'll manage his players well and he'll push his coaches. The issue for a CEO coach like Duce (and Harbaugh in Baltimore) is that since you don't have a traditional system or history calling plays, you're at the mercy of the staff you build and your coordinators. You need to put together a strong group and be able to replenish those spots if you have success and they go elsewhere.

Honestly, I'm comfortable with either direction. Whether they give Duce his shot or try to find the next great playcaller in Brady, Kafka, etc.
