Virginia is the south... by all accounts.

Things get tricky, because Northern Virginia and parts of the Hampton roads region, is more culturally akin to the East Coast than it is to the south.


Robert E Lee is damn near god down in Richmond, but folks who live in Arlington,Alexandria and Springfield will be quick to kick that " Virginia isn't really the south" stuff... all that Virginia isn't the south talk goes away when you're outside of Prince William,Fairfax,Arlington and Loudon County.

culturally its midwestern/west coast but location wise its still a east coast city, but the Ohio border is like 45 minutes away so maybe that's why people say that.

West Virginia is the South.

The only argument for West Virginia not being the south, is that it was apart of the Union...and therefore shouldn't be considered a southern state.

I lived in Virginia... and to hear people say it's not the South, is strange considering how the entire state beats it's dikk to civil war re-enactments,colonial Williamsburg, and how stressed the states history is damn near everywhere.

nobody is saying it isn't southern but from the demographic of Richmond, nova, Norfolk and Newport news all seem and feel like east coast cities at least from my experience.
