NoVa is not culturally southern area...same with the 757...the mason dixon line has been cultually irrelevant for over 100 years. 757 = heavily influenced by NY. Richmond is southern. Roanoke is southern. Arlington is not. Alexandria is not.

Virginia is the south... by all accounts.

Things get tricky, because Northern Virginia and parts of the Hampton roads region, is more culturally akin to the East Coast than it is to the south.


Robert E Lee is damn near god down in Richmond, but folks who live in Arlington,Alexandria and Springfield will be quick to kick that " Virginia isn't really the south" stuff... all that Virginia isn't the south talk goes away when you're outside of Prince William,Fairfax,Arlington and Loudon County.

people might envision southern california when they think of the state tho.

The Clipse is a Southern group, who's influences are East Coast.

Pharrell is a producer from the south, therefore he's a Southern producer.... he's not a "Southern Producer" like a Shawty Redd,TJ Toomp or a Zaytoven tho.

Virginia Beach isn't like the rest of the state...don't mean that you can't take a hour ride to Poqouson and find out just how southern it is....... or to the next city over, Norfolk

i didnt pay enough attention in school apparently. according to wikipedia, maryland was considered a border state (neither union or confederacy) but most residents joined the union army

There really is no argument for why Virginia isn't the south.... it's been a Southern state historically,geographically and economically since the 1700's.

If it weren't for Missy Elliot,Clipse,Timbaland and Pharrell sounding atypical of other southern artists...nobody would even attempt to say it's not the South.

Not true. Been living in the Deep South all my life and there's plenty that don't consider VA, KY, AR even Texas truly Southern.
