If you never saw Evangelion its absolutely worth a watch (whether you love it or hate it, you'll be entertained guaranteed)
I'll never forgive that series for this scene.

It was one of the most pathetic scenes I've witnessed in an anime.

That being said it might be worth skipping the original series as the last movie for the rebuild has gone into production.

Evangelion really wasn't primarily a mecha anime though. It featured mechs but it was more about the deconstruction and analysis of character archetypes with a bunch of religious references and insanity. If you came for robot combat it's the wrong series. Gundam would be better for that.

That's like saying Macross isn't about mechs, its about how music is the bridge between cultures. Gundam isn't about mechs either, its about society's progression in new playing field of haves vs have nots lol. It'd be different if the machines weren't literally tied into every significant character and theme in some way in Evangelion, but they absolutely are. I think TTGL and Code Geass kinda support your argument better.

Evangelion literally has some of the best animated giant robot shyt out. You don't pour that kind of money and time into something if its not the key feature of a series.
