Demon Slayer Movie.

Top-notch visuals, animation & music. Best we have seen for UFO yet. As far as the story in the movie goes.

Both the Shinobu vs Douma & Zenitsu vs Kaigaku were both very good. Had the typical flashback exposition the series is known for but was handled well enough.

Tanjiro & Giyuu vs Akaza pacing was atrocious. Tanjiro flashback was fine, but Akaza's flashback added nothing, and that shyt fukking dragged. Like, damn, it felt like 30-45 minutes just on that. The pacing was atrocious, and the ending to the fight was fine, but it lasted so long that at that point I was like, Can this be done already?.

Daughters and I just got out from watching and everyone was hyped leaving. Just a good, entertaining sequence of events and the storytelling in the last act was probably the best I've seen in the series.

Pleasantly surprised and a great night out with the squad, theater was damn near packed for such a late show.

The movie is going to do big numbers in the West. Which you never see with anime now, which is very impressive.

Demon Slayer is really showing how big it is. People mention a new Big 3, but honestly it is more of the Big 1. Demon Slayer is in a league of its own in terms of pop culture impact, casual anime fans, & popularity. It is like the perfect first shounen to introduce to someone because, yes, it is generic and basic, but it executes in a good manner. Unlike MHA which has cast bloat and major pacing issues. Not to say Demon Slayer doesn't have the latter, but a new anime fan won't have much issue with it.

I am curious if the insane manga popularity of JJK translates to the anime. I still think it is a league below Demon Slayer in terms of popularity and everything I mentioned above.

Of course the two series haven't had the influence CSM has had on upcoming manga. Though that's the only thing I would say CSM has over Demon Slayer and JJK since the anime was basically a flop.

Note I am not mentioning quality of work because that's a separate thing.

CSM (Fire Punch too) has influenced manga such as

  • Dandadan
  • Hells Paradise
  • Centuria
  • MAD
Those are just the more notable works. There are many more newer manga that straight up copy CSM, but do it in the worst way possible. You don't have that with Demon Slayer and JJK which are just more popular in terms of pop culture.

Influence doesn't imply popularity. HxH, Bleach & Naruto had more influence on upcoming series than One Piece, but One Piece is definitely the most popular in terms of pop culture after Dragon Ball. Demon Slayer is a very traditional and basic shounen with good execution influenced by JoJo, Bleach & Naruto. JJK is mostly a modernized version of Bleach with big influence from HxH & Fate.

Unlike the days of the Big 3, when anime would be airing alongside their manga as it was running. Manga are typically much farther ahead now. You won't see that influence by only watching anime. Like the case with CSM, the anime was a flop, but the influence that it had on shounen manga was already a thing.

I feel like Demon Slayer is this generation's Dragon Ball Z. Entry point anime that does its genre so good that propels its popularity to a different level. Sure, DS has decades of shonen stories (that Toriyama popularized and influenced) that it used to "perfect" the formula, so it doesn't have that "first to do it" caché, but that doesn't really matter when meassuring popularity. To the West, I guess it's the new Naruto? but Naruto didn't have the level of overall success that DS has...One Piece is the only real comp in that sense, but OP could never become entry point anime at that crossover level because its length (hell, the joke was that Naruto fans didn't know shyt because the real top shonen was OP, lol).

JJK is way too convoluted and grim to hit like DS does. If anything, Demon Slayer became more to the point and easy to follow as the story moved along, which made it easier for more people to start joining in. JJK has none of that, there's no way it can reach DS's level, regardless of how big JJK is in its own right and probably will keep growing in popularity in the next 2-5 years.

I would agree with that. What is key is how MAPPA adapts the Culling Games because they really need to cut down on the exposition at the minimum and make it more digestible for anime fans. Granted, I could see JJK being a 2nd starter anime for those that really liked Demon Slayer but want something more modernized. Then hopefully in the far-away future, CSM will be the shounen that is a breath of fresh air among fans. More of a shounen they would appreciate more once they watched more shounen.

One huge thing Demon Slayer has in its favor is its length. Which is also a big thing for both JJK & CSM too. Now with weekly being a thing of the past, with seasonals you get more quality per episode with visuals and pacing.

I am someone who puts a huge emphasis on pacing. Original Dragon Ball is 153 episodes (only 20 filler, which is good compared to the Big 3). Then with Kai, where the pacing is much better than the original DBZ, there are only 159 episodes. I think we all know how fukking awful One Piece's pacing is. Bleach & Naruto pacing is fine if you skip filler; otherwise, pacing might just be as bad as One Piece.
