What "intangible" IT factor is J. Cole missing that Drake seems to have?

I'm not being facetious, I am genuinely a bigger Cole fan. I've bought every single Cole album and I've never paid for a Drake album. I relate more to Cole and I like the fact that he doesn't sing as much as Drake (obviously he lacks singing ability), but there's just something missing with this kid. It's more than just charisma, it seems to be a lack of maturity/ability to present a universal worldview. Like, what the fukk was "Wet Dreams" doing on FHD? Why the fukk would I care about how Cole lost his virginity? Same goes for "Hello". Like, I've listened to the song a couple of times and I can't figure out why he thinks his audience would care. Drake just seems to have a more universal appeal, the ability to see beyond himself and speak in a general/abstract manner.

Apologies if I haven't articulated this right, but I remember reading an article talking about Cole a couple of months back, about his lack of an ability to speak beyond himself. Like, I hear 2Pac or Biggie rapping about their troubles, but I feel it. Same with Nas (not really a big fan) and the other legends. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? :ld:

Compared to Drake? Well, Drake's albums tend to be more thoroughly produced where it just sounds fuller. Take Care, for example, has a consistent soundscape and is stronger in that sense compared to Born Sinner's. Drake also has a much stronger hook game and vocal ability than Cole does. Added to the fact that Cole also doesn't have a ton of bangers, and also doesn't feature a whole lot (2011-2013 was a long wait and we only got a few features from him around that time period), it makes sense why people would feel Drake stands out more. If we gave Cole a bunch of beats from 40/T-Minus/Boi-1da (which REALLY helped Drake out from the jump) and told him to utilize his strengths, people wouldn't be saying stuff like this. But because Cole tends to sticks to doing most of it himself and isn't into the whole Hollywood thing, he is where he is. And he seems to be very happy with it, because there's nothing wrong with that at all.

At the end of the day, you like who you like, and who's bigger and who makes more club songs should be irrelevant to you. It's about what you prefer and what you connect to the most. That's it.

Doubt it.

At the end of the day, all things equal...Cole is getting washed on everything:

Case in point:

1. Drake is a better, more natural singer. Cole sounds very unnatural as a singer.
2. Different type of music. Drake makes club tracks and has the ability to do so. Cole doesn't.
3. Production. Drake takes advantage of the ability to pick the best production, Cole continues to rap over his own stale beats with a few others mixed in.

not saying Drake>Cole to me, just answering the OP. People want to party, Drake gives people shyt to party to. Cole doesn't.

Hmm... That's only one song though. Plus Drake had most of that beat, only time Cole was on it was at the end. If it were equal verses and equal time, I'd be more inclined to agree.

I just think Cole is much more capable than people tend to believe. :yeshrug:Problem is, he doesn't want to go the way we're thinking he should. And he shouldn't be listening to us anyway, because he's the artist and we're the fans. He should do what feels right with him. He seems to be the down to earth, everyday type of rapper and I don't think there's anything wrong with that, since it's working out really well for him. We can't expect him to be a Kanye, because the reason Drake is making the music he is, is due to Ye. People love that about Cole because he seems easier to reach than maybe Drake or Kendrick is. But all I know is, Cole and Drake got love for each other, so it's all good.

Drake is always visible, you only really see Cole during an album cycle. That being said, he is still one of the better selling artists so I don't think he really needs to change anything as far as trying to be marketable.

that's also a good point, j.cole is ALMOST NEVER seen unless its album time

drake is seen all through the year as a feature

but like somebody else said, j.coles gonna have a longer career.
