What "intangible" IT factor is J. Cole missing that Drake seems to have?

I like Cole, and while I think this post is a little too harsh, I think it sums up nicely the main issues some people have with him, and why I don't think he's reached that "next level" as an artist

"With every J Cole album or mixtape, you already know what you're going to get:

-Reminiscing about the past
A 30 year old rapper has no business making a song about his first sexual experience. Leave that to the teenage rappers. What have you done as a grown man? Do you have no grown up life experiences to rap about?

-Girls
He either says he'll take yo girl, or he's complaining about girls who played him, or he's talking about how great his longtime girlfriend is, oh and there's also his mom who was a crackhead..

-Moving to New York for college
How long ago was this guy in college again? You would think he just got out by the way he talks about it.

-"The Ville"
His southern hometown.

-Pseudo political/pseudo conscious rhymes
He raps about conscious things because the rappers he likes (2Pac/Nas) rap about them, but he seems disingenuous and doesn't have anything new to add to the discussion.

-Bravado
Talks about how great he is and how he's a "new legend" instead of letting others decide who he is through his body of work.

J Cole takes no risks and does nothing to innovate or elevate the sound of hiphop. I feel like every project he does is the same story told over different beats. Kids like him because they don't know rappers have come out and done what he does, 1000x times better. J Cole has no style and no originality. He continues to come off as more of a fanboy of hiphop culture than an actual rap artist with his own unique position in the rap game. In 50 years time we will remember Kanye West as an awesome, outspoken, creative, producer/rapper and Nas as an incredible writer, story teller and genius, but how will we remember J Cole? What is his place in hiphop? What is his purpose? Who is J Cole and what is his contribution? After all these albums I still don't have a clue."

the thing is though, the dude just did over 300K. He won't change his formula because he really doesn't need to. he's doing amazing numbers and has a dedicated fanbase, so in the end all the shyt we're saying as critics doesn't really mean much

It has nothing to do with singles. I don't give a fukk about singles, sales, or any of that bullshyt. It's ability as an artist/rapper that I'm referring
Drake is a flat out better MC, I think anyone who objectively listens to all of their projects will come to that conclusion. I'm talking everything from Comeback Season to The Come Up, features and all. Drake has better flows, better punchlines, metaphors, puns, double entrendres, more charismatic, just a flat out better song writer. Drake has way more quotable rhymes. Drake also has crossover appeal because he can dabble into R&B, Cole tries to sing but Drake just does it better. Drake's had better production throughout his career, where as Cole outside of Forest Hills Drive has either done his own beats or rapped over others people's beats. While Cole isn't a bad producer too many of his beats sound the same and his drums are weak.

Drake is better at making singles and build a large catalog of nice features to the point where he's the "stimulus package" artist. While, Cole is a more versatile storyteller and more wordly, Drake is more braggadacious and develops characters in his story (something Cole doesn't really do), to the point where we know about his Acura, his mother/father/grandmother, we know the strippers and women he's been with by name. While Cole is considered the more personal and honest artist, Drake is actually more honest and talks about true things from his life. Cole's stories tend to be more general and hypothetical.

Nope.

Its widely acknowledge that even tho Drake had one verse, his was better.

Drake's is way more descriptive and creative...it inspires more of the imagination to fill the picture.

J Cole is just telling you what he's doing with the women and being direct talking to them.

Drake just paints these pictures... goosebumps, drying off in the covers, calling in late to work, beat me there as far as finish lines go, the extended stallion metaphor, bath water soak in and things to do with lotion, when lights coming through drapes and we're both yawning i roll over and ask if I can hit it in the morning....

Yo.

That shyt is just FIRE. Its MAKING you think of that lazy sunday you've had with your girl...not just spitting some superficial game with her hoping she goes along.

Cole didn't even slack on this...but Drake just outclassed him so nasty it wasn't even fair. Cole didn't stand a chance and he went as hard as he could.

Trust me man. Women are drawn to Drake's descriptive nature cause its almost literary in its presentation of how he vibes with the woman more than what he's just superficially doing with her.

Comeback Season is literally one of the best mixtape of the decade though. Thats how good that shyt is...and I really think a lot of people didn't even hear it.

Drake has a more embarrassing way of talking about it that dudes basically won't ever admit they feel.

Marvin's Room was damn near a classic song because of this feeling.

Your average rapper is going to sit around and tell you how hurt he is, but will still maintain that edge.

Drake will sit here and basically make you feel as depressed as you once felt and won't feel ashamed about doing it.

Its WAY more raw and sincere that way...effectively making you have more of an emotional connection to it.

Cole talking about women: "I missed her and I can't lie. I liked these things we used to do. I wish you were still here"

Drake talking about women: "I'm sitting here wondering when you will call and I can't keep this front up any longer because its tearing me up on the inside and I put this front on just to keep from losing myself"

Now...most dudes won't admit to feeling like Drake did...and will opt to make themselves sound like Cole...but on the real, I guarantee you most dudes hate that Drake exposed how they REALLY felt on the inside.

Cole half white and lived with his white mom in the burbs in North Carolina :why:. Why ya mothafukkas trying to make it seem like Cole lived a harder life than Drake?:leostare:

They both the same more of less. Only difference is Drake owns up to his flaws and uses em as part of his story. While Cole hits nikkas from a more broader perspective. Thats why alot people feel Cole and what he is saying. Yet Drake's music hits home harder. Its cause Cole does it from a surface level. While Drake speaks from experience.

Cole will tell you something bout how some white people are racists in his city. While Drake will tell you how he got bullied in highschool for being a mixed kid in a jewish neighborhood. Both sides of the same coin. One just does it better than the other.
