What "intangible" IT factor is J. Cole missing that Drake seems to have?

J Cole actually reminds me of the "Keep Ya Head Up" side of Tupac, but more watered down, and less soulful.

Which I guess is still good enough to fill that lane nowadays.

Just from the songs I've heard:whoa:(mostly his mainstream shyt)

Its not about being honest, its about being honest about the right things.

For the most part. Drake makes "safe" music. Music thats not too deep, not too shallow. His music doesn't go against the grain, it doesn't offend anyone, it's really surface music. Which is why he'll never have a classic album. All of his shyt is WAY TOO SAFE.

Drake IS a better rapper if you actually listened to their catalogs.
nikka what? Drake ain't no goddamn better rapper than Cole. Off pure lyrical ability? and flow?

Drake hasn't said anything cold in years. Cole raps circles around Drake, so does Kendrick. Drake just has a bigger appeal, better production, and he's more versatile. But as far as pure rap? Drake's lower echelon.

I love it when people try to make it seem like Drizzy is some lyrical messiah, when his tracks show otherwise  Drake is an average rapper. And an above average artist. Isn't the once in a generation artist that nikkas make him out to be. The only once in a generation artist we've seen with the new nikkas is Kendrick. You can make another Drake. Can't make another Kendrick.

Drake's stans keep him hot though. Even though he lacks classic music, he has enough people cosigning his garbage, that EVENTUALLY. people will be convinced its hot.

Claim drake makes safe music while claiming that drake makes soft music in a genre in which ur supposed to personify "hard masculinity"

Claim Drake makes safe music yet complain that drake's music is too feminine for hip hop, brehs

See what u dnt understand is

Being an "activist on mic" sells
and most up and coming rappers be on that tip cuz its easy to get supporters like that

Its less safe going on records and talking bout how much times women have left u broken
or how u were bullied in high school
etc.

Because the latter leaves more room to be made fun of or clowned

As for his music is shallow comment...it depends

If all u do all day is sit home and are pretty much a couch potato most of ur days..ya his music is shallow
But to nikkaz who actually got homies, deal with women, and have a damn life..the music drake makes that speaks on the struggle of dealing with women, maintaining relationships with yo boys, and keeping in touch with fam as u progress through life, is quite deep

J Cole makes the same type of music Drake....just not as good. He has the lonely songs, girls from his past, love songs, when he was broke, etc. They just don't have the same quality. The review that breh posted earlier in This thread said it best.

Drake raps about being young, rich, famous, fukking bytches, falling for strippers, flying out thots cause he lonely....basically the shyt all rappers do but don't talk about much because they scared to break their personas. And then he'll still do records about growing up, grinding to get on, girls that used to front, girls who he left behind in Toronto, etc. How can you hate dudes subject matter??

The H
As someone who is not a fan of either. Just feels like Cole is trying hard in forcing "it".

I dont like either one of them, but I can say I appreciate Cole for what he's trying to do. Im just not a fan of it.

I remember when this shorty in my university was chopping it up with me and I asked what music she was into at the time. She said mostly Drake. I said Drake?! :childplease::mjlol: The nikka from Degrassi?? This is around the time of So Far Gone first came out. I was like you gotta listen to Max B and shyt. She was into that up top shyt when I first met her. Fast forward a few months after actually listening to his music objectively, Drake is that dude. He has some misses but mostly hits, bangers, slept on shyt, lounge shyt, deep shyt. I apologized about it next time I saw her few years later.

Insignificant posting from an insignificant poster
drake's music is better produced, but now he's sound is becoming played out

Yeah, but Take Care was fukkin' amazing.

J Cole has a nice lane he's comfortable making a certain type of sound in...

But Crew Love will always be a personal fav that most artists in music, period... have seldom paralleled.

This is rap game 2014, there are dudes wearing skirts and leggings. Young Thug makes Drake look like Malcolm X. There is no "Hard Masculinity" needed to make it in rap anymore, cut it out B.

Claim Drake makes safe music yet complain that drake's music is too feminine for hip hop, brehs
When I Say safe, I'm talking about societal shyt. Drake doesn't make anyone feel uncomfortable, which is something you need to do to make a classic Hip Hop album. I don't know of any classic Hip Hop albums that don't have any societal themes. Which is the layer that Drake is missing most.

Being an "activist on mic" sells
and most up and coming rappers be on that tip cuz its easy to get supporters like that

Most Up And Coming Rappers, are on the same ignorant shyt that he's on. Being an activist doesn't sell. bytches, Weed, Money, and Love sell right now. None of those are real though. In the end none of that shyt matters and none of that shyt sticks. Which is why he doesn't have a classic yet. You gotta go deeper than that. GKMC was the most honest album I've heard in a long time. Even MKL was better reviewed than any Drake album. Not because YG is a better rapper because he isn't. He just made certain people feel uncomfortable. He called out the fukking pigs in L.A. Talked about being black. He ain't a better rapper than Drake but he's deeper.

Its less safe going on records and talking bout how much times women have left u broken
or how u were bullied in high school
etc.

Once again. Maybe 10-15 years ago it was. But the rap demographic has shifted. These white kids in suburban america will eat that shyt up. Drake has more white fans than he does black fans because they think hes real. They think he's true. Its not so much cultural appropriation, as it is cultural misrepresentation.
A better definition for cultural appropriation is when members of a majority culture borrow from a highly disadvantaged minority culture without understanding and create a misrepresentation to the public, perhaps in a disrespectful fashion. This can lead to a dilution of the minority culture and/or contribute to eventual assimilation against the wish of the members of said minority culture.

A hypothetical example might be as follows: Culture A, which is very disadvantaged or endangered, has a traditional art style, which artists from Culture B, a majority culture, decide to emulate. However, the artists do so without understanding the nuances of the style, thus creating works that look good in the context of Culture B but mean nothing in Culture A. Over time, this might contribute to more and more members of Culture A losing sight of their heritage and buying into the majority misinterpretation of their culture.

A real-life example would be Quentin Tarantino's ignorant depiction of African-American speech in his movies. Tarantino is known for his dislike of actors ad-libbing, and a number of studies have found that his understanding of African-American Vernacular English is based on stereotype rather than reality.

The problem, of course, is not a black-and-white issue, because what one might consider misrepresentation might well be innovation to another, and also because it's impossible to force people to prefer authentic culture to nouveau or synthesized culture. In addition, it's not only members of different cultures that can do this; oftentimes, minorities might innovate in ways that make their culture more acceptable to others at the expense of faithfulness to tradition. For example, many ethnic restaurants in the West water down their cuisine to accommodate Western palates. Does this instantly become verboten if it's a Westerner doing it? What if it's an unskilled minority person doing it?

That's what Drake is doing. He's misrepresenting a culture. The guy isn't from it, doesn't know about it, but according to America that's who we are now since he's at the helm. He's shifted the culture so much that the honesty that comes from nikkas like Cole, Wale, and even sometimes Kendrick is shunned because they think that other guy is real. You got dudes who call Cole's music "corny" even though its TRUE. The fact of the matter is the truth is corny now, and the fake is real.

If you're a 15 year old boy, then yeah. Absolutely. Which is why I used to fukk with him so much. As you get older, you might need more from an artist. I get money, I got hoes, I got boys, but that's my life. A lot of nikkas try to live vicariously through Drake. Take this from a former Drake stan. Once I got my shyt in order as far as hoes, cars, money and shyt, his music became less appealing. I'm never going to be convinced his music has layers. Because it doesn't. Even at the peak of his prowess and at the peak of EVERYONE cosigning him, he's failed to drop a classic album. That is very telling, and that other guy Kendrick has 2 already.

What I will say, is that I see it shifting back slowly. Being honest and real, is starting to become cool again. Not the "Honest" about how your life is so bad, but you're so rich. That's easy to be honest about. It's easy to be honest when you're living good. Even Drake's "honesty" comes off as indirect bragging. It's like when nikkas here post brag threads and mask them as problems. On some "Man, I only got 5 cars, and I don't know which one to drive" type shyt. It's important in rap that you motivate the youth, and talk about their issues, because that's where the purity of rap comes from. This is the first time we've had someone at the top who DOESN'T DO THAT. Which is why this culture shift has been so huge. You look at every hottest rapper in the game before Drake (Nas, Jay, Big, Pac, Ja Rule, Mase, 50, Kanye, Wayne, T.I, Lupe, Eminem) so on and so forth. They all had some sort of real shyt. shyt that isn't materialistic, or shallow. So that in itself kept the agenda in check, Drake puts out so much "swag rap" and hashtag anthems like "0 To 100, and 6 God" and all this other shyt, that it fukks up the balance of the game, and nikkas start to make that music too, to try to get it on. The nikka at the Top is supposed to be the Sheriff. The nikka that keeps the culture in check and keeps the in pure. Jay never cosigned a lot of the fukk shyt, Nas never cosigned a lot of the fukk shyt. We got a suburban Jew at the top who cosigning EVERYTHING, so in turn EVERYTHING that is trash is fire now. You got Iggy Azalea who's rapping in a fake accent and really leading the culture. shyt like that wouldn't happen under Ye's reign or Jay's reign, why? Because them nikkas wouldn't allow it. Drake is going to be the reason white people take over Hip Hop. Because his music is fraudulent itself. Rapping in fake accents and shyt. It's only a matter of time before the "White" Drake comes, and it's finito for black rappers.

Every mainstream rapper on the top makes those songs. The difference is they had a balance. Jay had "Change Clothes" and all this other Mainstream shyt, but he also dropped "99 Problems". Ye had Golddigger but he also had Diamonds From Sierra Leone. Ye had "Slow Jamz" but he also dropped "Jesus Walks" . Its not a coincidence that Mainstream rap is the worst its ever been while Drake is at the helm. He's the example, which is why rap is in shambles. His music doesnt have a balance. It's all "hits about bullshyt". Could Drake be on the radio with a 99 Problemz? or a "Jesus Walks" or an "All Falls Down"? No. Because that's the shyt that makes motherfukkeers uncomfortable. The fact that he doesn't offend anyone keeps his stock up. It keeps everyone fukking with him, because NOBODY is getting their feelings hurt. But also dilutes the quality. There are people who don't fukk with Ye, because some of his shyt is offensive. shyt like "New Slaves" will really make CERTAIN people feel uncomfortable. But its also acclaimed because its raw, its the GOOD TYPE OF HONEST.

If this culture change does happen. Where the next generation's Ye comes through. Someone who's just as talented, but is big enough to change the agenda. Drake is bye bye.

J. Cole had more of a Black upbringing than Drake. That much is obvious
Being "poor" is black now?
:dwillhuh:

No being "poor" isnt exclusive to blacks. But really the only similar thing about their upbringing is that they're two mixed nikkas from Forest Hill

Only except Drake's Forest Hill had 1/10 the percent of black ppl of J.Cole's area

You can argue Drake is the better artist all day but to act like their first hand black experience is anything similar is just being obtuse breh

dat essay :merchant:
U say "maybe 10-15 years ago"

Yet u realize that during that era what was selling was drug dealers turned rappers, who bragged bout they cake and moving weightrappers who rapped the hardbody violent sht
And rappers claiming blood on wax

In todays time being an activist on mic sells more
Example....Kdot and cole

And u say "uncomfortable sht"?
nikka u know how many nikkaz complain that "Marvins room" is uncomfortable to listen to :mjlol:
Why?
Because it exposes a trait and a thought in nikkaz that happens when we in our feeling bout an ex breh..Again ur problem is u want every rapper to be on some activist sht with this rap sht...one of the reasons a Drake is so popular is because his music treats itself like personal therapy, in that he's not tryna save the world but rather voice his struggles, his ambitions and the demons of his personal life And people can relate to that

And what do u mean that he's misrepresenting a culture..
Where is Drake perpetuating a lifestyle that is foreign to him?
Your whole essay is basically filled with claims with nothing to back it up..as if im supposed to just accept that as fact.
True artistry is doing what u wanna do without lettting the people change you
Drake represents this because despite all the jokes bout him being soft, or too rich to claim "started from the bottom" or "he needs to stop singing"

Drake continues to make the music thats true to him even if it earns him ridicule or "drake type of jokes", because Drake knows his story more than anyone
