bruh wowwwwww. Strange Fruit Project and Tanya Morgan. Been a minute since I heard anyone speak on either. Both are dope. S1 went on to produce for other people, I know. Listened to TM's latest project last year, liked a few joints on there. But yea Brooklynati was cold as hell.
nikkaaaa this thread resparked memories. I haven’t listened to them in years. Like who? (S1 mention). I’m have to check it.

To the point where we are where we are now. In that nas also eventually souled't out to jiggy-ism. Which further ushered hiphop technical skill era renaissance. Into the current devoid of skill and lack of culture era. That plagues us all in the domestic united states currently.

Backpack rap is called backpack rap because of the producers. The term began to circulate around 1997/1998

They would carry tons of vinyl and whatnot out the record store in said backpacks. This later evolved into the emcees adopting the term because of the dozens of rhyme books they would be holding in their backpack for battles, cyphers, etc. Mainly following the tradition of the Kid Capris, Pete Rocks, DJ Evil Dees, and Q-Tips an era before them (1988-1994)

And being that these types of producers were more eclectic and underground, the name stuck and became the moniker to their sound. Backpack rap.

The name helped set this subgenre apart while other sounds and waves like the "bling bling" and "shiny suit" eras were also popular amongst hip-hop fans.

First groups to adopt this term were the likes of:

Black Star
Binary Star
Da Bush Babees
MF Doom
GZA
BCC
The Beatnuts
Heiroglyphics

etc
I swear Mos was talking about snuffing dudes for calling him a backpacker

If you went to shows and stuff back when the term came about you could spot them. ..baggy FUBU jeans, baggy Ecko T, snapback, backpack, and if you ever spoke to them they'd be telling you how they just got the latest Jurassic 5 single, or some other bland shyt. .

Then you say to them have you heard The War Report? . .. you explain to them it's Capone N Noreaga. . . Then they say oh I'll have to check it out . .

Funny enough tho I do remember Method Man wearing a back pack on Yo! Or something freestyling. . Before it became a term
