I swear Mos was talking about snuffing dudes for calling him a backpacker

It was a term that was built off the necessity of producers whom leaned towards the more traditional side of rap production always having backpacks with them because of the vinyl they'd always be copping...and the emcees for storage of all the millions of raps they wrote before the smartphone notepad app.

"Backpack Rap". Self explanatory.

They didn't like that he was becoming "commercial". It Was Written was too flashy for them.
That’s fukking retarded. I was put on to Nas in like 08. I was in middle school. Illmatic will be classic but IWW is the needed departure. I don’t want a part 2. I didn’t even like NY SoM Pt 2 for the longest

IWW, I Am and Nastradamus?
If that’s the case every other album proves he redeemed himself
I’ve never liked the term backpack rap because the likes of Slum Village, Little Brother, Black Milk, Tanya Morgan, Mickey Factz, Lupe, Blu, etc don’t fit into the box you think of when discussing backpackers. The level of musicality, themes and storytelling isn’t anything close to the stream of consciousness, rappity rap aesthetic the likes of Aesop Rock, Slug & Atmosphere have.

By today’s standards, pre-So Far Gone Drake would be considered backpack as he was working closely with Slakah, Hazel and other non-mainstream producers.

Drake is an emo backpack rapper.

Ye is emo backpack rapper.
After the atmosphere deal the pr company who worked those records and signings.
All signed rappers who fit into that mode.
Or their pass system for major label rappers.
.it is where all the low quality current music came from with trap production in the current era is.
All music now is backpacker rapper influenced mixed with prison industrial dconomy semantics from th le twentybyear anniversary of rhe communications act in 1993. Starting in 2013 globally in most entertainment industries.

People are emo backpacker rap and don't eem know it. Even the trap and blues genre artist are backpacker rap. Country is backpacker rap. Pop is backpacker rap. Especially after the katy perry triple six mafia pop record. Everything is engineered to that standard.
The whole world is emo backpacker rap influenced.
Meets ruthless records runs the world semantics.

You were born too late. The critics and the "purists" turned their nose up at it. They wanted Illmatic pt2.

Nah. I don't think so. They may have been loved by those fans at the time (then) but they kept progressing. I still don't really like Talib that much lol.

EDIT: I feel like I should explain why I don't fw Talib. It's cause of this:

I'm not mad at Talib for his verse, more the fact that he participated in the song to begin with. RA's verse is literally just listing genocides, but not even saying why they were wrong, just listing them. It seems to be a common theme amongst white MCs to just list awful shyt that happened with no context, to impress the listener. It rubs me the wrong way.

I really fukkin hate this dude.

ill say this...R.A. i dont consider backpack rap for some reason....he is legit nice when he wants to be...that whole crustified dibbs shyt he was on back in the day though :heh:

Backpack was cool before the Def Jux, Sage Francis, Atmosphere gay shyt. The original backpackers played Black Moon, Wu Tang, Mobb Deep, Poor Righteous Teachers, Lords Of The Underground, MOP, Gangstarr. Then it got taken over after 9/11 and turned into Incel rap. All those back packed white groups sucked dikk.

this..i had a white partner in college who liked a lot of different rap..from the mainstream to the underground shyt...dude was knowledgeable as shyt so i respected his opinions when we talked hiphop...i was going through his cds and he had a lot of def jux stuff...aesop rock and all that....never heard of them at the time so he was like yeah its dope and said i can borrow some to check out...i borrowed his aesop rock cd and was like :scust:..it was horrible..i was like yo you actually like listening to this? :hhh:...later on i had a coworker (white) who hated any rap except def jux stuff...mfr loved him some sage francis:what:..its funny with the def jux cats..damn near all of them name the black influences that made them want to rap and its like a 180 departure :heh:

This here.

It started in the mid to late 90's. When the posers came in and started making wack obscure shyt that mostly suburban kids fukked with. Same dudes tried to divide the underground. It was all these new people who didn't really know much about the culture, but wanted to be a part of it by acting like they were anti-commercial rap or whatever. It was a way for certain subpar wannabe rappers to feel like they were making "real" Hip Hop, after years of not being accepted by actual heads who rejected them before. The term was used widely in the 2000's, but started as a way for the fakes to feel like they belonged.

I agree and don’t deny anything except the emo backpacker label. I think you’re using it in the wrong way.

That’s dumb, IWW is very complimentary to Illmatic to me considering his pen game never suffered when exchanging his production for hit focused beats.

Which is taboo.
Which is why things have descended into the prison industrial economy madness we are all affected by.
When the rapper eho ushered in thr technical renaissance went commercial then jiggy. Plus krs endorse'n puff and later bambattymon.

Made it so the culture had no gateway protection mechanism. Nor mores and norms to stop.an overpopulance of toys from ruining an entire culture.

The original backpack crowd viewed Illmatic as the crown jewel of boom bap hip hop and Nas as the savior of that sound. IWW was seen as a betrayal they took personally. Nothing mattered to that crowd except that it wasn't Illmatic and didn't try to be
