I thought you were referencing a particular event regarding those two and the hiphopinfinity site. Are you saying El-P profited from Rawkus or had a position with the label? I was under the impression that Rawkus pretty much fukked everyone they signed or distributed. Definitely seemed like an evil label, and the Murdoch connection is no surprise. Rupert Murdoch might be one of, if not the most evil white man on Earth. I don't know how familiar you are with overseas media, but he's bought up tons of space in the media in overseas countries. A friend of mine near Brisbane tells me about the Sky News shyt he finances, basically a Fox News Australia. Evil.

You seem like you've had an interesting life so far @Art Barr . I have tons of questions I could ask, but I'll stop here. :salute:

I know you're close to MC Juice. Did ya'll work on any tracks together? Anything uploaded online I could check out?

Final four by horaeson jae.
features me and ju on the same record.
Along with other chicago alums. Lioe puggs, to o type star. Which was my second feature ever.
Tip of the iceberg and listen to the werds feature my first solo records on ju's debut albums released at scribble jam in o3.
Just google the artists, albums or song titles.

Do yall consider Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Lupe, and Kanye backpackers? Also, I remember when Kanye use to wear backpacks in photos.

Kanye no, his music had too much accessibility and pop sensibility (not dissing, I mean that as a compliment) to be backpack rap even if he wore a backpack. Talib and Mos maybe, probably Talib more than Mos. Mos style kinda ascended the label IMO. Lupe I'm not sure, but I'm kinda hesitant to call him a backpacker for some reason. Probably cuz he had a couple big hits lol.

Backpack Raps were not too keen on song structure, as well as a true narrative.

A lot of people hated the Canibus-style artist that was OD on lyrics, but not much on flow, delivery, style, flair and so on.

Plus a lot of brehs hated it because they undercover simps and women hated complex lyrics. Low key, its a reason why so many women gravitated towards southern rap in the mid 00s because of this. Those dudes just followed hoes on what they like.

That's what I thought the word came from

I think the term originally came from the imagery of Black moon and their ilk, and how they carried themselves.. And then the term was misappropriated or evolved into what people in this thread are saying it became. Extra focus on complex lyrics and big words.

Rawkus had the backpackers buying their compilations. Soundbombing and Soundbombing II are hard to find though.

I wouldn't hear no one bumping Jedi Mind Tricks or Afu-Ra in the streets after they sold a 8Ball of hard white. Not my taste.

Cats would be looking at you weird if they heard u playing that up here in Baltimore.

Train Of Thought is a album that I can play on a regular basis no matter what. That, Blackstar, and Black On Both Sides.

I'll add Hi-Teknology Part 1 in that mix too.

I use Backpack Rap and Rappity Rap interchangeably

Basically stream of consciousness abstract rhymes that are about

Words.

Flipping rhyme schemes and .. you know .. high level technical skills.

Funny how people who like rap really hate complicated rap
It wasn’t complicated it was lame

it was a term created around 2002 or 2003 that symbolized rap like Aesop Rock, 7L & Esoteric, MF Doom, Cage, and a bunch of nonthreatening hip hop that college kids were into on the forums(which were becoming big at the time). Sandboxautomatic and HIphopsite.com made thousands off selling albums and autographed merch of artists that weren't mainstream. Backpack/nerd rap imo was basically rap college kids were into that wasn't really street. Normal guys being themselves. Living Legends were a dope crew that birthed guys like Murs, Eligh, and Grouch and considered "nerd/backpack".
Drake is backpack rap just with smoother beats
