I watched both. Kobe at his best was just as prolific defensively as Mike. Def the more versatile defender. Why couldn't MJ defend John Stockton, Kobe would have. What about Penny? What about GP?

Kobe was defending Westbrook, CP0 in yr 17

MJ was a great defender no doubt but he wasn't checking Zeke, Larry, etc...

Mike tried to check Magic & got killed

Why didn’t Kobe check Nash in the playoffs? :mjlit:

Mj did guard smaller guards in particular zeke go back and watch the 89 ecf
And why even bring up Stockton he wasn’t a scorer and towards the end of his career he wasn’t a great penetrator who could collapse a defense no need to put your best defender on him
And can people stop with this magic killing mj thing
Magic didn’t score more then 25 points in a game for that entire series
Jordan got in foul trouble in game 2 so they switched pippen oh him
Jordan continued to guard magic in games 3,4 and 5 and did a damn good job of defending him yet all the credit goes to pippen because of that full court defense highlight

Defense is probably the most skewed attribute in basketball people run with narratives and not facts

It musta been nice for Jordan to have Pippen there beside him to take the toughest offensive player so he can rest on defense or gamble for steals. Kobe unfortunately never had a Scottie Pippen to guard the team's best player for him. Maybe if he did he would have had more energy to gamble for steals.

I watched Kobe his entire career. And when he wanted to he could lock anybody down. Its why most of the players he played against would always call for screens whenever Kobe was guarding him. Only Iverson could shake Kobe one on one. Everyone else needed screens. Even in 2013 when he was 34 years old he was locking down a young Kyrie Irving one on one.

Trevor ariza and Ron attest we’re the lakers primary defenders during the second 3 peat
Kobe was checking rondo not Paul Pierce or Ray Allen

And for the first 3 peat fisher, and lue got the smaller guard assignments and Rick fox guarded the bigger wings

Not saying Kobe didn’t matchup with top players because he definitely did and had success with it. But we not about to act like he was the primary defender and didn’t have help
Not to mention he had 7 ft rim protectors who could clean up his mistakes whenever he gamble and missed

Center was the hardest position - I thought of putting Dream or Ben Wallace there. I wanted to have Duncan in the lineup too, but probably not at 4 because I want that to be someone more versatile. Pippen could have been at the 3 (if so I'd probably bump Kwahi up to the 2) and Draymond would have been fine at the 4.

Some guys seriously named Stockton, Kobe, Robinson and Wilt? :dahell:

In fairness, Kobe defended more star players than MJ

Kobe defended 1-3. Phil basically used Kobe the way he used Scottie on the defensive end.

But when did he ever stop any of them? Name ONE star player that Kobe stopped in the playoffs.

Even in his defensive prime I remember Reggie and Jalen running a train, Lakers needing to switch Kobe off Iverson he was getting killed so bad, and a 20yo Tony Parker getting into the lane whenever he wanted.

Also the hyper-mobile switch-everything team

2013 Miami LeBron
Tony Allen
young Rodman
peak Draymond
Ben Wallace

That team would be annoying as fukk because you couldn't do anything to create a mismatch anywhere. All five are active as hell, all five can defend on the perimeter, all five can defend 1 through 4 at least and multiple guys can defend 5.
