i wanted to learn a trade after high school, but when it came time to apply to postsecondary programs, my parents did all they can to steer me towards university. i was horrible at math so i could only get into a B.A. program. now i'm stuck with a degree in political science that i can't use. can't go to grad school either bc my gpa was too low. not to mention i'm broke as shyt :mjlol:

but at least my parents got to tell their church friends that their son was studying at [prestigious local university]:ehh:
:picard:

When you speak to most carpenters, plumbers, electricians etc. someone in their family showed them the ropes from a young age.

The same applies to all professions.

When families get broken, kids lose that inspiration and knowledge is not passed on. It was done intentionally and the damage will take generations to undo.
Word. I remember my moms telling me (Junior in HS) about some dude who was an Electrician. She was supposed to have me take a class there at night, but things fell through. Man, if I did that at that age I'd be caking now.

Cost of learning is almost non existent if you go through a union Apprenticeship:manny:

Had to pay a couple hundred for union initiation fees, and for tools obviously and that’s the only outta pocket expenses I’ve occurred in my 2 years as a apprentice

That’s the thing, nikkas nowadays see middle class as being broke:snoop:

Lot of nikkas will say 68k a year+ Union benefits ain’t enough :russ:

People think working a retail job is easier, people associate getting dirty with a bottom feeder type profession.. Plumbers, electricians and carpenters aren't public figures, they aren't made to look cool in pop culture, the ones you see look bummy. They are often the play the background type, they don't usually drive bmw's or wear fancy clothes.
if electricians and plumbers went to work wearing suits like lawyers or doctors people would associate it with wealth, shyt even if they dressed nicer in general..

But look at Asian and Mexican immigrants or even indian, they move the whole family over, go work contract manual labor jobs and pool their money together to buy houses in nice neighborhoods.. black people are too selfish and stingy to share anything

Side note, why are so many of the posters in this thread banned? there atleast 2 people per page

I actually know most black men doing trade jobs. Good money too. But walking up to a chick in your early 20s saying you work in cooling and heating or you’re a plumber isn’t the coolest thing in the worst tbh :manny:

you will lose money chasing women but you will never lose women chasing money.. plus it really aint none of their business what you do.

A good way to weed out the aint shyt women or the ones that's after your pockets..

what one woman don't like another one will.. I can go on and on with these quotes but I think you get the point

I've made a thread on this a while back, but going to college is easily the biggest mistake I've ever made. Got nothing out of it except for a silly little piece of paper. I'm currently working at a job I could have gotten just as easily with a GED:stopitslime:

More men, not just blacks, need to look into trades. You can make a good living with one, and the cost of learning one is a fraction of what a college "education" costs.:ld:

That's you, not me or most of the people I know. I went to school for physics and had a job lined up after graduation. So did my friends. And the starting salary was $60000 while my friends - who went for EE and ME - were starting off as Engineer I's making $65k-$75k. College is easily a great tool to come up if you know what you're doing. Just so happens my passion in life is pretty lucrative. It was a win-win situation for me; and I didn't even know that a physics degree was a gateway to high paying jobs.

Tell your whole story.

Absolutely

They pay you based on how many years you been in. For example you might be in a 5 year apprenticeship program, pay scale might look like this

Year 1: $21.44
Year 2: $27.06
Year 3: $33.74
Year 4: $37.06

Year 5- you top out at journeyman:$ 41.00

That’s why I tell nikkas not to go to trade school, just get into a union apprenticeship. They’ll teach you plus you’ll be earning some decent bread :obama:

Unions don’t really do residential electrical work. That’s more independent contractors and side hustle type shyt.

IBEW(Electrical union) does telecommunications, line work for energy companies, power plants, skyscrapers, warehouses etc

Im talking about Carpentry, Masonry, Plumbing and becoming Electricians ?

These are Jobs that can lead to a middle class existence or even can make you rich in some circumstances.

Even though there are some You see too few black men in these jobs. What is the main obstacle(s) that keeps black men out of the trades ??

It's really difficult for a "concious" black man to work in those field because it can get really hostile.

That being said, Its alot of Black men in the trades. You must not be in the south.
