r&b has turned into hip hop. singing over hip hop beats, singers are rapping now, cursing and explicit lyrics stickers on r&b albums, singers dressing and acting like rappers, "we don't love them hoes" mentality in the music, featuring rappers on slow jams, etc. if you listen to a boyz II men album and then listen to the dream's new album it's like night and day. both are jammin', but only the boyz II men album is a sensual mix of love and heartbreak sung over a lush musical landscape. the dream album is about fukking, strip clubs, and pseudo rapping, sung over bass heavy hip hop tracks made specifically for the club soundsystem. both are welcome. but the boyz II men type of r&b is disappearing, and everyone wants to do the dream's type of sound. no one cares to sing like stevie wonder or donny hathaway anymore. they just want to be r&b rappers. THAT is what happened to r&b. i thought the "neo soul" era was gonna save it, but they died out real quick. ahh well. i'm a crate digger anyway, so i don't just listen to the new shyt. hell, i was jamming the "vulnerable" album on the way to work this morning. im good on my r&b shyt....(google "vulnerable" it if you don't know what it is)

Yup and exactly! Great post. :myman:

That Vunerable album is incredible. "She Needs Me" is my song. :ohlawd:

You ain't gotta dig THAT deep to find rnb...granted you'll mostly only find the Timberlake/Adele/Robin Thicke appropriated variety on pop outlets...but just tune in to your local urban adult contemporary radio station, the actual home of real rnb...for black folks, it's whatever station your mama 'nem listen to when it ain't on the gospel station...it'll invariably have a name like "Foxy 100.SuchAndSuch" and have Tom Joyner on in the morning...the playlist currently looks something like this:

Today's R&B

90's R&B

hard to believe that they are in the same genre :why:

EDIT: new unsigned R&B hype....Alex Isley. Daughter of legendary guitarist Ernie Isley of the Isley Brothers. Seriously dope shyt. and she writes and produces all of her own shyt. :obama: peep it...

Well black people as a entity have lost their soul which separated us from white folks in the first place. Rap has eaten the genre whole. They also stopped singing about love and started focusing exclusively on three topics: fukking, people hating, and trifling significant others.

Frank Ocean is severely slept on. Channel Orange was my favorite album of 2012 in any genre. and i was banging that Nostalgia/Ultra and Lonny Breaux before he even got a deal. i believe that (despite his sexual preference), he would be a force to deal with if he had the right guidance. def jam and whomever manages him doesn't know what to do with him. so you don't hear anything from him. he can definitely reach legendary status if he had the right team. but sadly, if you can't make music that is radio/club friendly, you will get no attention. sad....:snoop: what a waste of an extraordinary talent. :wow:

R&B has been left the building,
When one thinks of it now,
They name artists like Drake and Rhianna,
Which is bad/sad,
Plus,
The four letter word,
Does not mean anything the this fast paced,
Digital age we are living in,
We want things now and fast,
I do not want to make love,
I just want a quickie,
And love is about growth,
Change the women,
Men will follow.

:wow:
This was beautiful breh :wow:

Words of a real nikka:wow:

:wtf: Mainstream media was all over Frank Ocean's piece all of last year...of all the talented acts out there that got no attention, Frank Ocean is who comes to mind as being tragically overlooked :dwillhuh:...they've given dude MULTIPLE big time showcase performance opportunities, I mean...it doesn't get much bigger than the Grammy's...they gave him 6 nominations for his debut album and let him perform live at the show...they tried their best to coronate the kid...he just happens to absolutely suck live
