Rap has always been about the latest and greatest. Especially at this time when Rap was evolving so much every year. Truthfully, Rakim was way out of the Rap conversation by 94'. It's like that Boondocks episode when Thugnificent finds out he's irrelevant. White people still had Rock music, so they didn't jock Rap music like that. Liking older music is a stuff white people phenomena that largely didn't exist yet.
If you weren't relevant and making new music, you weren't relevant anymore period. It's the same way today. There weren't white people and suburban nigs fighting to keep older Hip Hop alive back then like there are now. Listening to old music from a few years ago was like wearing dogged messed up dirty old sneakers from a few years ago

But I disagree that Snoop couldn't be considered GOAT at this time.
The Chronic solidified his status as a contender to the GOAT title and Doggystyle was simply the sequel to the Chronic. Back then everything coming out was GOAT contender status from Tribe to Wu-Tang to Pac to Biggie.
Rap was literally getting better everyday back in 94'.
And I was ten years old and I knew this. Hearing a classic for the first time when its brand new is almost a spiritual experience. It's different from hearing a catchy song that bangs or listening to a hot song that has no replay value six months to a year later.
