ALL-TIME FOR 94

1. rakim
2. ll cool j
3. krs-one
4. melle mel
5. kool moe dee
ice cube would've been a wildcard for me, seeing that he was on the decline by this point.

1. run dmc
2. public enemy
3. NWA
4. furious five
5. cold crush

1. larry smith
2. marley marl
3. dr dre
4. bomb squad
5. rick rubin

1. mc lyte
2. queen latifah
3. salt n pepa
4. Roxanne shante
5. sha rock

nas made illmatic

those 1st two pac albums were just aiiird.
thug life gets him into the top 15.
I don't think illmatic is better than either of Pac first two albums.
Thug life is waaaaaay b better than illmatic, but that's all subjective.
It's a fact that illmatic made less impact than pac's second album.
So how is that a big enough deal to make him top 5?

Coolio was bigger then Spice 1 in 94. And he established himself with WC 3 years prior.

Actually in this day and age we say 'Top 5 dead or alive' all the time. Or we say 'Top 5 alive.'

When we mention that top 5 today the usual suspects are Nas, Jay Z, Jadakiss, Ghostface, and then it varys to where u might mention a deceased rapper. Or you might throw Lupe or Kendrick or Rapsody in the mix.
Coolio was bigger (only due to his newfound commercial success) but I never spoke against coolio so what's your point?

Rap has always been about the latest and greatest. Especially at this time when Rap was evolving so much every year. Truthfully, Rakim was way out of the Rap conversation by 94'. It's like that Boondocks episode when Thugnificent finds out he's irrelevant. White people still had Rock music, so they didn't jock Rap music like that. Liking older music is a stuff white people phenomena that largely didn't exist yet. :ufdup:If you weren't relevant and making new music, you weren't relevant anymore period. It's the same way today. There weren't white people and suburban nigs fighting to keep older Hip Hop alive back then like there are now. Listening to old music from a few years ago was like wearing dogged messed up dirty old sneakers from a few years ago :shaq2:.

But I disagree that Snoop couldn't be considered GOAT at this time. :mjpls:The Chronic solidified his status as a contender to the GOAT title and Doggystyle was simply the sequel to the Chronic. Back then everything coming out was GOAT contender status from Tribe to Wu-Tang to Pac to Biggie. :hubie:Rap was literally getting better everyday back in 94'. :lawd:And I was ten years old and I knew this. Hearing a classic for the first time when its brand new is almost a spiritual experience. It's different from hearing a catchy song that bangs or listening to a hot song that has no replay value six months to a year later.

@ the bolded: but we're doing the same thing regarding the goat list. the reason that names like kool moe dee aren't coming up like that is because the eldest person in this thread was like 15 in 1994.

as for left eye; I cant put anybody in my top 5 without some sort of release, and presence in the culture.
I know left eye put mc lyte & latifah in body-bags when they got on the same track with her tho.
but even if that were the case that wouldn't put her in your top 5 is all I'm sayin :aicmon: tryin to tell me people don't get bullied at times on posse cuts... not that I necessarily agree but people get bullied, but that's not the discussion here

People see top 5 and flood in the thread mad Pac wasn't mentioned. This is 1994. 199-goddamn-4 y'all... Pac ain't on the list, Snoop was still too new to be on the list. People would be arguing Snoop in there based on his potential and and how nice he was but he wasn't lyrically amazing. Snoop was nice as hell though and in 1994 he was probably my favorite emcee.

Rakim
Big Daddy Kane
KRS One
LL Cool J
Slick Rick

I can see being a popular list at that time.
A lot of people being mentioned on that list, light had dimmed by time we get to 1994. The west had a lock on the rap game by then, they sold more records and all the major movies were west coast based. Cube was still pretty big, but pac was a major player and much bigger than krs, kane and rakim in 94. That is just facts.

I'm shocked by this thread that more people don't have snoop as they number 1 on the list. In 94? Snoop was superstar and just dropped a major classic.

Scarface was huge

Geto boys were pretty big

Redman, wutang specifically method man, ll cool J still had some buzz, mc eiht, dj quick, bone thugs, that's who was popping where I was at. We had moved on from rakim kane and krs by 94. Really didn't get on biggie til 95,

:comeon:

lesbianest, left eye would've bodied every verse on this song in her sleep.

this remix was boring with no hot lines whatsoever. it was only popular cuz of circumstance - remix to a huge record, and they brought in 3 of the biggest female rap names ever at that point. but the song remix itself was meh.

LOL @ your response being Left Eye bars that never existed on the Brandy remix. Thats a fantasy not reality. Your fantasy is not what happened in 1994.:mjlol:

LOL @ your response being another fantasy as if dudes were bigging up Left Eyes verse on a song with Latifah and Lyte that came out 95 when the topic is about 94. :heh:

I don't see why people are dismissing Snoop. There was "Deep Cover", his appearances on Chronic, his own Doggystyle album. Snoop was making some iconic moves that positioned him in the upper echelon of rap. Dude had performances and videos that were crazy. I didn't even mention Murder Was the Case soundtrack.

Nas is my favorite rapper, but it is quite hard to put him or any of the guys who dropped debut albums in '94 over guys who had albums out with bigger impact prior to '94. Pac was already making waves with two albums.
